I am rigging my kayak with a seat for the first time.  People with Wavewalk kayaks have put all sorts of seats on them but I have never really been very pleased with them.  One of the advantages of the Wavewalk is the ability to shift your weight forward and backwards on the saddle changing how your boat rides in the water.  Seats mostly end up restricting (and thereby defeating) that feature.  Someone suggested this product.

And I think it might work well.  I will have to grind off the tab to be able to center it on the saddle but I think it will work and I am going to give it a try.

Now to determine what seat to put on it.

Two options I am considering

A :    http://assets.academy.com/mgen/68/10302868.jpg?is=500,500

or

B: http://assets.academy.com/mgen/14/10319814.jpg?is=500,500

Not sure if the Canoe seat has any structure under it to be able to mount it to the slider, but I like the minimalist approach vs. the chunkiness of the other.

Any anyone have any experience with those canoe seats?  Any other suggestions before I pull the trigger?

This is how i did mine. Dense foam against kayak plywood then seat.  Then stitched up some webbing for support. Haven't had in water yet. Hope its not to high.

Thanks.  I got mine in the mail,  and will have to mess with it. It is the right size and shape but not so sure about the comfort.

Sea trials today.  This is a temporary instal to determine if I have the placement of the slider right before I start drilling holes.  I believe this is going improve my seating situation without compromising the design of the boat (being able to move forward and backwards effortlessly).

We will see.

A total bust.  The weight of the slider (metal part) dramatically impacted the balance of the kayak.  It was not undoable, but uncomfortable.  Seat itself was great, but without the slider it pretty much defeats the purpose.

Back to the drawing board. :P

Can you get the slider reproduced out of aluminum?

Possibly.  There is a local fab shop that I will check with.  Be interesting to see the cost.

Or bracket the bottom of the seat so it lodges into two slots then you could lift and move back or front. If that's practical I have never been in one of those or even seen one in person.

Possible but not practical.  The saddle is made to move on.  I slide forward to deploy the rigger.  Slide to the middle to paddle.  Depending on wind I can be forward (into the wind) or slide back when there is a following wind.

As you get into the season your back toughens up and you don't need to lean back, it actually probably improves my posture.  I may just do something to fix some good padding and call it good for the year, R&D money used up.  I may do something with Al at some point, but I am going to focus on fishing instead of rigging for fishing.

:)

Thank you Widgeon for the inspiration!  Couldn't be happier!

Expect a sales post for a barely used GTS seat....

Glad you like it!  I may not be done with this idea quite yet. I might have my son make one out of fiberglass/composite which will make it really light and allow me to use my seat.  Future project for next year.  To busy fishing to mess with my boat!
