I use my huge over sized carabiner to go through the mouth and out the gill.I can pick en right up, and it locks em in .  If you keep the lings head and body just under the water you can damn near pet them ( in most cases)/ ..Or I will tail grab them. I can usually tail handle a ling up to about 40 inches.

Really? How many 40" lings have you landed from the kayak?

BTW ... holding a large fish by the tail is a good way to break it's spine ... please don't do that to a fish you plan on releasing.

I'm sure to you  I'm just a puke that doesn't know about fishing. But I can handle a fish man. I've been fishing since I was just a young kid , for salmon and halibut , not just trout on a bobber.. .

Trolling lancer jigs works best for me. Cast and retrieve works well on suspended rockfish.

Most important thing is get over some structure. Bigger lings like bigger bait here's my first ORC lancer that pulled two lings. That's an iPhone 4

I land my lings with a swift lift to the cockpit and a solid leg hold.

Side note:  I wasn't talking to myself, I was talking to a very green Yakbum Fillis
