How about this classic second one could go on a rack over the first. On the two piggybacking I would make some scupper brackets that hold them together but I would  do that if necessary. I have had spots boat inside my boat on the outback to get it down to the end of PC.

I carry 2 kayaks "flat" on my Prius, but this could work on a Subaru.  The roof rack has yakima landing pads on a track anchored to the roof.  The Revo 13 is upside down on lightly padded crossbars, The Revo 11 is in Kayak saddles in front rollers in rear.  The back crossbar is 66", front crossbar I think is 58".  I will occasionally hit my head on the back crossbar trying to get into the back seat when no yaks are loaded, but it's worth it to carry 2 boats.  I use the saddle/roller combo when self loading, so that's why I leave that combo on the rails, otherwise, I'd prefer to haul them both upside down and have a 2nd person help loading.
