PM sent.

FYI for anyone else.  A small group of us will fish at one of three locations on Sunday.  Beverly Beach State Park/Otter Rock, Depoe Bay or Seal Rock which is south of here 20 minutes (35 on a tourist weekend).  I'll probably post an update on this thread Saturday evening after we make plans.

Greg

8/3 am: the waves are flat here at BB and that's where you'll find us - bobbing around Otter Rock and possibly Gull Rock.

wanted to update on the trip.

the day before i went out and played in the ocean for my first time to get a feel for it.  i didn't know what to expect but it wasn't what i recieved.  the first facefull of water wasn't nearly as bad as the first time i got thrown.  i spent about 45 minutes trying to break the surf and get into open water.  each attempt met with the same result,  me tumbling around under my yak drinking saltwater and sand.  i figured it was futile and i was struggling to catch my breath at the end so i packed it in and called it for the day.

fishsniffer and myself met up with wannabe at the park sunday morning and we decided to head to depot bay for a smoother launch.  wind was blowing pretty good and there were some threatening looking (at least to me) curlers at bev beach.  all i could think about was my fate from the previous day hoping the results would be different 12 hours later.  i was assured it would be a much easier launch.  the last thing i heard before i got in the van to drive 10 minutes north to depot bay was fishsniffer mumbling something about "well the whales in depot bay can get pretty close, so..."  as he shrugged the arms and raised eyebrows in an "i hope you're ok with that" kinda move.  ok this was by far the best part of the trip for me.  the pure anticipation on the drive from bev beach to depot bay.  completely not knowing what was going to happen and the possibility of so much happening.  all new experiences.  you cant pay for a feeling like that.

fishsniffer did a great job preparing me for situations and safety issues while wannabe fed me candied (or maybe it was pickled) ginger in case i thought i'd puke and did figure 8's around us with his mirage powered hobie.
they let me take the lead out of the marina through the jetty and into the bay.  glass to BIG water in 30 seconds.  i was never scared or did anything i didnt want to do but i was intimidated and alert.  i would have been fine just paddling around making sure i hit every swell at a perfect perpendicular bearing.  but i settled down soon and started to enjoy the situation.  i thought briefly i might be getting a bit queazy but remembered wannabe's "tasty" offering and decided that it going in the hatch mildly tastier that it would have been coming out.  thanks to wannabe's fish finder we found where we needed to be but unfortunatly the wind wouldn't let us stay there.  so we paddled back and ultimatly that was the end of the water for us that weekend.

it was a great weekend even though we got the crud beat out of us.  and the ginger wasn't that bad, in fact i think i'll eat some next time just in case.

thanks guy for taking me along.

That surf looks a bit big for your first time.  I'm glad you came out of it all right and with a good attitude.  Going out is easier than coming back through, so if you thought it was tough going, just image surfing those waves in.

What he said!  Especially in a sleeveless.

Nice boat though!  She's immaculate.  Don't let Z- get near her!
