Sportsman's Warehouse has those Crab King Coil rings that twist and fold down to less than a foot across and open to about 30" across for $25!! Have not seen them anywhere else for less than $40.

Thanks for the find, I'm starting to gear up for crabbing, one deal at a time.  ;D

I've used these, like them a lot.  You can't go off and leave them like the traps (need to pull them every hour or so), but they are so so much easier to manage in a kayak than a big box trap or a rigid ring.  That's a great deal!

Ended up getting one yesterday after work at the Clackamas store.  Should have gotten at least two, probably 3.  Was waiting on todays paycheck.... Anyways they are all gone now, just got back from going there on my lunch, just missed the last 2 that went out the door I was told.. D'oh  :BangHead:

This is a regularly stocked item, didn't seem to be a sales price either, so hopefully more are on the way

Do you guys just pull these up by hand from your kayaks?  Or do you some sort of pulley system to help assist with the weight?

Pull by hand.  Even full of crab, they are not that heavy.

The trick with these rings though is that once you pick up the line, you have got to pull the pot up ASAP.  If you slow down, or let it slip back down a little, you will allow crabs a chance to escape.

What I did with mine was paddle up to my float, toss it and the line over my boat into the water on the other side, then pull like crazy, tossing slack rope back into the water on the other side as I went.  Then when I had the hoop pulled up, I folded it over like a taco, trapping the crabs inside.

Only problems with this system are 1) angry crabs in your lap, 2) crabs entangled in the netting, and the tension from taco-ing it makes them a little hard to get out, and 3) did I mention angry crabs in your lap?

I rigged mine with a little piece of pool noodle at the top of the harness (knot the loop a couple of times to keep it from riding up).  This will keep the harness up above the hoop when it is on the bottom, and (I think) help keep it from getting tangled or tossing crabs out when you pull it up.  Then 50 foot of cheap braided rope and a crab buoy on top.  I bought some cheap extension cord winders and use them to keep the rope neat.

Reasons 1 and 3 (you know, the "angry crabs in the lap" ones) are good reasons to use the unwieldy  Danielson's. I'm think I'm going to give them a shot (the crab ring) anyway.

It wasn't too bad, just a little nerve wracking.  I was wearing a wet suit both times I did this.

FYI, I picked up a pair of mini-Danielson crab traps at Sportsmans.  Shaped basically like a barn, with doors on either end, approximately 2/3 the size of the big square ones.  My theory is that I will soak them in the Nehalem or Nestucca this year while I salmon fish.
