Introduction Junction

Hi everyone, my name is Brandon and I live in Southwest Washington. Never fished from a kayak and am looking to explore a trip out of Cannon Beach or Depoe Bay, as a first try at ocean kayaking. I have a cousin and some friends who are interested as well, and am researching a trip for a handful of newbies.

I'm a new attorney in Clark County and when I'm not working or enjoying my family I razor clam, work on small older model outboards, and do a little remodeling.

I have been perusing the archives of this forum and am excited to work towards outfitting a trip to jig some cabezon, lings, and rockfish. Thank you to those who have setup this community resource.

Welcome! when you decide to go to Depoe Bay let me know and I may tag along. If you guys wanted to make a weekend of it I know there is a place close to Newport(just south of Depoe bay) that rents ocean kayaks. Not outfitted for fishing but if all they need is a yak you can put together a milk crate and just toll it on the back.

Thanks William, I expect to take a test run before getting the crew out to the coast. I found a place that rents a setup with suit and pfd for $100 a day in Portland. I think the big trip with the boys may have to wait till Fall because everyone's slammed this summer.

 I really hate to be the "Safety Cop" but if I don't--- someone else will.
 So-- that said-- have you ever even been on the water in/on a kayak ?
 Have your cousin and friends had any experience with kayaks ?

 If the answer is no--- you might want to re-think your plan.

 I am all for guys wanting to try new things out. I would just like you to be aware that the ocean has no forgiveness when mistakes are made. You might consider a trial run somewhere calmer to start. Get some time on the water then expand your horizons. But please do so safely.

 How about taking a look through some of the safety threads on here. There is a wealth of information to be learned.

 Temper your excitement with common sense and you will be fine. No fish is worth anyone's life.

Thanks Mark, I appreciate the cautionary tone. I have been lurking in the safety forum for some time and have a bunch of planning and preparation to do before I will get deep. I certainly respect all water, but especially the ocean.

I'm very grateful to be able to peruse these and other forums for experienced information related to my interest in kayaking for bottom fish off the coast.
