Has anyone every hit area 13 around the nisqually area?  I keep hearing that there is going to be some hot fishing there this year and I am trying to find places to launch.  I hear fox island is a good bet also.  I guess I might have to just go drive the shoreline and look for parks or launches.

There is a DFW launch spot (Luhr Beach) on the west side of the delta off Milluhr Dr NE.  You're probably a mile or 2 from the fishing grounds (I think .. don't hold me to this as I don't really fish down there).  Careful at low tide.  Mudflats!!!

Further north of Luhr Beach is Tolmie State Park http://www.parks.wa.gov/parkpage.asp?selectedpark=Tolmie
It's supposed to open at 8am, so don't know how helpful it would be. There's also a private marina/launch further out towards Johnson Pt., but I don't remember the name right now.

I'm not sure what kind of access there is on the other side of the delta near Dupont. That town didn't really exist when I lived in Oly, years ago.  ???

Luhr beach launch is probably your best bet.  Things seem pretty spotty in the south sound right now, with fish trickling in, should pick up in a week or so.  Good luck if you get out there and be sure to let us know how it goes, I've been intending to try out this very same paddle/fishing, but with a baby due anytime - it will have to wait until next year.

paddled this this past sat. morning with hooknose.. low tide was starting to swing to high, the mudflats were uncovered, it was misty, and yep it's about 2 miles to get around and into the mouth of the river.. we caught the tide rising as we entered the mouth, let it push us up as we paddled, then went up as far as the I-5 bridge. float and bait wasnt working, seals were all over, even as far up as the bridge,  had maybe 10 power / jet guys on there with us that we counted, even a pair in a canoe, everyone was relaxed, friendly, none of the combat that that area is known for.. hey, even the nature trail hikers on the refuge we saying hello as they passed by..

hooknose is a great guy.. lifelong fisherman who knows these waters and whats what..you want any more details about our trip, get him to post them, i think it's his turn to tell a tale here.

btw, if you make an immediate right off the ramp, you can go straight in to MCallister Creek, for coastal cutthroats..

Rich covered it pretty well.  A nice little trip, and we were over fish all morning, they simply were "locked up".  Jet boaters were casting or pulling plugs, floating bait and casting spinners all to no avail - just like us.  That river is pretty notorius for the fish getting lock-jaw like that, so it wasn't a total surprise for me.  I had a nice dime bright coho nearly jump in the boat at one point, so close that it splashed water on my sunglasses upon re-entry  ;D
Talked to the fish checker at Luhr when we got back, she said that she had checked a total of zero salmon for the past week!  I think a little rain would go a long ways toward getting these fish to go on the bite, that will probably come too late for chinook, but may arrive in time for some decent fishing over some coho.
It was good to get out and great to meet Rich, I look forward to meeting more of the fine folks from the board.
Cheers,
Jason

Been seeing fish jump alot trolling the Coos River but one jumped at least 4 feet out of the water, it was pretty cool. that's the highest one i've seen jump out of flat water
See ya on the water..

havent yet checked the tide charts for the nisqually delta but am planning on heading there this weekend after the kings and coho...kings are about run out there from reports and info boards i've seen but coho are finally moving and biting too...

seems the best thing to use right now are large colored corkies with yarn, spinners  and some of the old standbys that have worked well for that area.. sorry cannot remember all the details, was kind of distracted by somethng else at the time

coworkers are banking it off the mounts road areas and have come back with fish each day, the smallest so far a 17# er. i gotta go do better than that, i'm tired of the shop big mouth and his bragging.

anyways, if anyone wants to paddle with me i'll be launching from the Luhr beach boat ramp....

Rich,
I *may* be able to go with you, tides look best on Sun. and Mon.  Not real sure I want to waste my good eggs on these non-biting coho.  But I wouldn't mind tossing spinners.

don't let your co-worker get to you, a lot of those guys are flossing those fish, so take their "success" with a grain of salt and continue fishing ethically.  If you see someone throwing corkies and yarn and jerking 1+ times per cast, you can pretty safely say they are in the flossing/snagging business IMO.  If you hear "hey, this one is hooked in the mouth!", while on the river, you Know they are flossing - why would someone be surprised/elated that a fish is hooked in the mouth unless they were flossing?  Okay, I'm done.  ;D

What time and day are you going??
My wife and I are thinking about heading out there this weekend, she just wants to paddle around but I talked her into bringing our fishing  gear with us. It's pretty nice not having to deal with the WAF since she goes out with me. I got her hooked on fishing this year. I took her to the kalama river earlier in in summer and she caught her first steelhead and a few weeks later caught her first salmon. Ever since then she has the fishing bug.
