Penn Jigmaster 500, $60 new.  Indestructible and more albacore have been caught on this reel than all others combined.  It's definitely old school - no ball bearings, but it will outlast your kids.  Spool with 50# braid so line does not get caught between spool, then 30# mono topshot.  No level wind. Killer for lings.  Buy as many as you like on ebay for $35 each.

Better yet get the narrow spool model, Jigmaster 501.  It's no longer made but you can get them on ebay for $60.  Rebuild the drags with Penn HT100 washers and Shimano drag grease.
