After several "dry" runs, finally connected this AM.  First hooked a nice fish that fought like a dogfish, twisted like a dog, and hung around below the boat like a dog.  OPulled it up, and a nice king looked up at me and spit the hook.
Then on a fresh herring, hooked a nice king that ran and pulled me around until I boated it.  Had to wait till I got onshore to snap a pic-----must get a waterproof camera!

It's a boy----31.5 inches.  No scale for weighing....I _really_ need a camera I can keep in the yak!!  One that is waterproof, like the Sanyo Xacti E1, would have been ablt to stick it in the water when the big one came up alongside and rolled a couple times, spitting hook at me.
A friend who fishes in a Boston Whaler got 2 around 20# yesterday, looks like the rain pulled in a nice school of hatchery kings.

Maybe I should have joined you yesterday. I fished until 4pm along the estuary just north of Steilacoom. There was a ton of bait fish jumping and I saw salmon completely airborne 3 times. They're out there. Overall, it was a great paddle... ;)

Jay, while jigging for herring I caught several of those jumping "baitfish"---they're salmon smolts.  Look like tiny gem blackmouth!!
I've taken the train down to Portland several times, and always thought that stretch around Steilacoom looks really "fishy".  The big football kings from the Nisqually must migrate down along there, one would think yhou could even catch them from the bank....

Sweet nook!  Congrats

The few times I've made it out have been at the wrong time - "shoulda been here yesterday" type of timing for me...

I launched out of Sunnyside Beach park. Great location but very difficult to reach the sand. There are old trees up against the high water line that must be overcome. Big tires would also help getting back up the beach.

It's a great site for fishing however. There is a small creek or river outlet just north of the beach/ferry landing. Lots of seals keeping an eye on things too.

It _should_ be great fishing----that's Chambers Creek, there's a pretty good run of kings up there.  One of the better spots and I think it';s an early run, compared to the Nisqually fish. They used to call them the "cookie Cutter"  kings, all about 12-14 pounds.  The Fishing Holes compendium had an article about Chambers Creek around 1993, I'll see if I can dig it up.
