Hit WG about an hour before high tide yesterday. Seas were nice, pretty large swells coming from the SW though. Fished for a little over an hour in various spots. I'm guessing I was about a mile out. I don't have gps so not really sure how far I was. Only bite of the day was an 8 lb. monster halibut! Yes I realize I'm reporting on a chicken but hey it's my first one so I'm pretty stoked. Landing back at the beach was pretty interesting, pretty big surf and at one point I was sitting sideways on my board. Didn't flip this time though. Any pointers on the landing?? Now time to pick out my Barbie rod. See you out there!

Great job!!!  As far as landing, gotta lean like crazy into the wave and brave with your paddle. If the surfs up, strap everything down. Also remove rod holders that stick up as well as rods.  You do it enuf you will flip it. The bad news at a WG is the surf breaks right on shore so you might get pummeled into the beach. The good news is you are on the beach. Also never stand between the beach and the kayak. Quite painful to have the kayak run you over with literally tons of water behind it.

I'm able to surf the wave pretty much all the way to the beach and then I drop off the backside of it and come to a complete stop. That's when the next wave hits my stern and kicks my a**. Maybe I need to head in with a bit more steam. I agree tying off your gear/fish is an absolute must.

I suspect you're the only member in AK who fishes from a board...  :notworthy:

Is that a SUP?  If so then surf it in.  I'm guessing you've tried that.

if you can't surf it in or not comfortable surfing in, you could turn around and go in backwards with your butt to shore, letting the waves bring you in closer and paddle into them if they push you to fast. Then when you land try to move fast enough so the second wave doesn't get you.

While sitting outside the swells lashing and securing things,  observe the waves and how they come in in sets.  Try and time it so you ride in with the last wave of a set.
I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't
