Perhaps a compromise could be to expand the fishing area for the tourney to include the bay and leave everything else as planned; let people fish where they want.

I vote to keep it at Sunset. The conditions couldn't possibly be any worse than past years, and besides, they add another element of challenge to the event. Also, I am camping at Bastendorff and don't want to have to drive back through town and north to get to the fishing spot!

Conditions were bad enough last year that you didn't stay out very long, conditions this year could very well be worse.
I don't remember what the forecast "was", but it sure turned to absolute crap last year regardless.

I'm hoping for way better conditions as I have a newbie with me and this will be his first salty experience in a kayak.
Don't want it to be his last.

That, and I'm sure your camping location is going to be a deciding factor on where the event takes place.     ::)
Seriously please leave the "Easy Button" at home.

I'm not voting in favor of either plan, as I am prepared for both.  I'm looking forward to some camping with friends and family, and fishing with the  NWKA crew.

See ya on the water!   :icon_salut:
If you have a newb with you, I can guarantee that an experience in the bay at Sunset is going to be better than launching from the North Spit boat ramp. The North Spit launch will be for advanced fishers only in these conditions. I'll bet money on it.

It's okay with me which ever place we launch, but don't kid yourselves; North Spit isn't going to be a piece of cake if the forecast holds. Sunday looks better than Saturday. My request: let's keep the scoring the same as it would be at Sunset. More interesting than an ordinary salmon derby.

Those are ocean conditions Paul... It will be different in the bay. It takes a little longer for the wind to affect that area.

The north spit is cake especially early and with the very little tide exchange there will be on Saturday. I have fished that area for Salmon a lot and the wind will not get bad until after noon. Yes , there will probably be some wind early, but it will be manageable.

I will be making an important announcement about the tournament tomorrow afternoon, stay tuned....
See ya on the water..
Roy

How are we doing regarding the fecal factor at Sunset Bay?  Have they given the all clear yet?

Wind by itself isn't going to bother my newb, its the wind AND the mighty swell at the same time that are game changers. He's experienced with wind and river, just not ocean.

If I don't get a late start I'll be dropping pots as soon as I roll in. I want some seafood!

If you guys need some crab bait, the cleaning station in the harbor always has salmon and tuna carcs in the bins this time of year. I don't think anyone would look at you funny for rummaging through those cans.  :D

Appreciate it, but I need to get rid of carcs more than I need room in my cooler... :)

Speaking of which, open invitation to anyone who wants it - I'll have a cooler full of shad and rockfish carcs I'm happy to part with.

I may take you up on that!

Also,

Leave your firewood at home.  As of this morning at 10am, there is a state wide ban on campfires in the Oregon State Parks.

Oregon State Parks

Effective Aug. 19 at 10 a.m., a statewide ban is in place for all campfires and open flames in properties owned and managed by Oregon State Parks, as well as the ocean shores. This includes but is not limited to fire pits, tiki torches, and candles. The use of propane stoves and/or charcoal briquettes for cooking may be allowed, but are subject to local fire restrictions. Please check with park staff. This ban will remain in effect for at least one week and will be re-evaluated based on fire status, weather and guidance from state and local fire officials.

This sux, as I had my daughter and niece load up a good 3-4 hundred pounds of firewood last night into the bed of my truck.  Guess I'll be unloading it all in the morning before we leave for Sunset.

I need to get specifics from the park if I can use charcoal to cook on or not.  :-\

Thank you for posting that! I was only an hour or two out from loading a bunch myself. That's a pretty big bummer for the kids.  :(
