hi all, i'm the FNG from Eugene.
went on a guided trip last Friday at Port Orford and i'm hooked.  didn't know catching ocean fish could be so easy. this is a no brainer.  just need a yak now and based some initial research they are not cheap.  love the hobie's with mirage drive but a little too out of my price range.  what are your guy's thoughts on the ocean kayaks.  specifically the trident 13?
i eventually want to be able to troll for salmon and i hear that's tough using a paddle but i can make do with rockfishing for now until I can afford a pedal drive yak.

Good solid yak, comes with rudder, anchor trolley, paddle, ready to go, add a pfd, immersion wear, and a fishing pole and you're set.

Of coarse, I might be a bit prejudiced, it's mine that's up for sale.

Welcome Zai,

Trident 13 is my goto kayak.  I love the layout and hull design.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that it's tough to use a paddle when trolling.  A lot of us do it all the time and I've gotten several newbies into salmon on the troll.  If you can walk and chew gum at the same time, you can troll for salmon from a paddle kayak.

Good Luck in your hunt!

I've personally never been out in the surf, only a couple of bay trips, but I've been on this forum for about five years and I think you're in for a learning curve. That said, there are days you will have the ocean hand you your ass. Maybe I shouldn't be so frank, right from the start and others may take it easy on you, but I have a feeling there's more than one experienced ocean angler who will see your comment, roll their eyes   ::) and think, "WTF, Ever"

Welcome aboard FNG and for the record, the OK T-13 is a great kayak

i can see how my post can be misconstrued that way.  i should have said that i didn't realize that there was a cheaper option to getting out to where the fish are.  i'm the guy that's always fishing from the surf or jetty with not much luck.  now there's a way for me to get out there and actually catch some real dinner!

thanks for the replies everyone.  we used a trident 13 during the trip and they seemed easy to handle and solid.  felt pretty confident in it.

The T13 is a great boat, and if you plan your tides right, will work great for salmon trolling in the bays.

I was in the same boat as you.... no pun intended, if i had the money hands down Hobie....love mirage drive.

My father went with the T13 and loves it and seems to glide through the water very nicely. I wanted a better more comfortable seat so i ended up going with the Lure 11.5, very stable to stand up ( but very wide ) any wind and its a tough paddle... after more research after my purchase.... :-\, i did see that wilderness kayaks has some really good options out there as well, love the removable center console for fish finder, and very affordable.

The Vibe and Feel Free are the same company, and Vibe has a 13 footer that seems really well setup out of the box for around $800. It isn't a lawn/beach type chair but looks well thought out.
