spent a few hours at hagg lake on sunday and was rewarded with........... nothing! fishing was a little slow for me maybe  i should of used a bait pole instead of the fly rod. oh well, it was still fun and i got to log a few more hours on the kayak.

Logging hours on the kayak is always a good thing. My personal experience is Hagg Lake hates me. I just can't seem to catch anything but small bass there.

Word.  I think I went to Hagg five times before I caught a fish there.  For some reason, it makes some of us work for it.

You would think if s guy could catch monsters in the ocean that a little lake trout would be a cake walk right.  ;)

Hagg Lake sux!  I live 10 mins from there and have spent many hours there already this spring/summer.  The fish you do get are 12" or less.  There are bass in the lake, but the lake hours don't give you much of a change to fish before sunrise, or after sunset.  Also, not a lot of structure.

There are some big fish both trout and bass in the lake, but REALLY hard to locate.

Now, it is a good lake to just paddle/pedal around, do some test and tuning for where you want to have things on your deck, and do some self recovery practice.   Sailing is also an option if you have sail.

I assume Hagg is like many lakes that warm up during the summer and the larger trout seek cooler water below 25 feet.
If you have a fish finder/sonar, you should be able to see where they are holding depth wise......invest in a down rigger and troll where the fish are.  You just might be surprised how much your luck will improve ;)

How strictly do they enforce the sunrise/sunset closing?  Any chance of being able to get on the water for the "one hour before sunrise, or one hour after sunset?  Been out to Hagg a few times, but would like to be out on the water before the sun comes up.

Thanks

Well, I've been locked in at Boat Ramp C 20 minutes after closing, which is at dusk.  By the time I got to my truck and had everything strapped back on the truck the gate keeper was parked up on the main road and would not reopen the gate an let me out until he was given permission from the sheriff.

I guess the way it works is that the sheriff was supposed to come out and interview me and decide if I was negligent or not and do his duty.

Being that it was just after 11pm by then, they were already busy with something on the other side of town it was going to be closer to 3am before they could make it back out to Hagg.  I told the gate keeper that I would wait patiently as I didn't have anything else to do.  Sheriff told him to let me go as he was able to run my truck plates and found nothing on me to make him feel I was suspect of any negligence.

Your mileage may vary.

Hagg lake right about now is likely only good for perch and bouncing around on wake. They stop stocking trout pretty early (see the Oregon Dept. Fish & Wildlife stocking schedules), but you can try trolling for the hold-overs around 20-25' down. (=

Hagg is still good for bass, I like to fly fish for them top water, but you need to do it before sunrise or after sunset.  Don't feel like getting a ticket or spending a couple of hours waiting on the sheriff or getting a ticket.  Hagg will also improve once things start to cool down. Thanks for the info insayn.

We have the same issue down at Cottage Grove Lake.  Day use and boat ramp area closes at dusk.  I am usually on the radio telling dannybay the day use is already closed and the park ranger is sitting in the boat ramp area waiting for the last few boat trailers to leave.  Good thing is that the sheriff is also usually sitting there with his binoculars out looking for people drinking alcohol on their boats.  Day use and campground is alcohol free so he watches and waits until they hit the boat ramp and walks over to chat with them.  Dannybay is usually the last person off the lake and I told him if I had to move the truck outside the gates and wait for him, his ride home might be less than pleasant. ;-)

You mean his walk home with the yak in tow would be unpleasant.  ;)

One would think that if you could locate the spider blocks you could find some bass.
