the problem i see with the hobies and correct me if i am wrong there is virtually no storage compared to a trident
Lots of storage in Hobies.

What the Hobies lack is a rod-pod style storage area that lets you carry rods inside the kayak, like the Tridents.  The pedal system won't allow this.  Thats a super handy feature if you are doing surf launches, but not really vital otherwise.

The rod-pod feature does give you the ability to stow larger tackle boxes, gear, etc... in that center area than you can with the Hobie 8" hatch.

YN,

Like 3wt said, the Hobie has TONS of storage. My nine year old likes to climb inside the front hatch to hide and she's not small (but she is flexible). The Hobie also has some really slick pockets on the inside of each gunwale with mesh covers. They are perfectly placed for holding pliers, scissors and a good bit of tackle. Although, I got to paddle a trident at QCI and REALLY liked it, I ain't given up my pedals. :nono:

That rod pod is very slick though and useful, but I was not able to stow or retrieve my rods any quicker than I could by shimming up to the front hatch without breaking them down.

What the rod pod did do was swallow a huge ling without blinking. If you added a couple of foam bulkheads and at bit of insulation, it'd make a really great ice chest/fish storage locker. The icechest would be more of a southen neccessity though. Actually, it did make a great fish storage locker with no modification (although it was a bit disconcerting having it flop around under the seat every once and a while :o) . The bulkheads would kill the full length access to the inside of the hull though (unless you added a rod tube)
<ever think wali was a closet boat designer?> ;D

I beg to differ with 3wt on tackle storage though. Not that he's wrong, but more of a paradigm shift. Think lots of little tackle boxes instead of a large one.  For that you only need a 10" center hatch (which BTW, the Hobie has ;D) You string them together and around the scuppers and you got an interior tackle trolley. I got that idea from the DIY KFS board a long time ago and it lets me pack and access WAAAAY to much gear and keeps your cockpit and deck clear.

BTW its killing me that I can't come play with y'all at Moutcha and PC (and B10 for that matter!),
but I'm out of dodge tonight on the redeye and may not get back till Xmas  :(
