I'm a solid paddler but a noob fisher.  I've put down lines a few times and rarely catch anything (except some bottom fish years ago in Barkley Sound, which couldn't be easier).  I fished off South Beach to Eagle Point on San Juan Island for 6 or 7 hours at morning and evening high slacks last week with a variety of gear and had exactly one brief hook-up.  Powerboaters nearby were doing OK, so clearly I need some tips.  Anyone planning to fish out at Shilshole in the near future to tell me what I'm doing wrong?  I live very near there and have a somewhat flexible schedule, so almost any time might work.

I'm not sure when I'll get the chance to go out next, but pinks out of shilshole seem to be plentiful. Go preferably at sunrise and/or a tide-switch, head out bw 100-500fow, and drag a pink hoochie behind a white flasher. I use a down rigger, but a diver or In-line weight will do fine. Early am = top 30 feet of the water column. Later in day = deeper. Try bw 1.2-1.8kts. If you see surfacing schools head over to them and chuck jigs or buzz-bombs, etc...

A lightweight bass rod and a pink hoochie jig work great.  Cast out and jig using a slow retrieve.  Tides are a little screwed up right now with slack being in the afternoon but mornings have produced best for me last week and before.  If it's calm it's easy to see them surfacing and a few jumpers.  The green buoy in front of Golden Gardens is a good place to be. You'll see the boats.

I work around the corner from G. Gardens and have, on occasion, been known to drag my kayak along...  Will give a shout if I'm planning something soon.

This Meadow Point  is exactly the place where I usually fish. But unfortunately I do even worse then you, spent 2 days of trying, caught nothing :) I have tried almost all sizes and colors of buzz bombs, then rotator, hoochie, casting, trolling, ... no luck yet!

I went out for the first time in my kayak for pinks last Friday and Saturday.  I lost one pink at the kayak on Saturday at slack tide near the buoy, trolling pink squid and white flasher.

I almost had my first salmon out of a kayak, I am still a noobe when it comes to fishing saltwater.  Looks like this weekend is too stormy to be out but I may try the Snohomish river on Sunday.

Hope you guys made it back. It was pretty gnarly out this am. We stick to the shore a little south of you thinking about how happy we were to not be yakkin it.

No worries: I woke up at 5:15 and wind was good but the big band of north-moving rain showing on the radar down past SeaTac was enough to send me back to bed.  By the time I got up again there was a sunbreak but wind was starting to pick up.

Maybe I'll finally kill one of those *&$#ing fish some morning next week.  >:D

Finally caught something near the green buoy at Meadow Point Wednesday morning. Unfortunately it was a 9" lingcod!  Thanks to barbless hooks s/he was easily released to look for something more edible than a buzzbomb and hoochie.

Gone this weekend, so wondering if pinks will have passed by mid-week. One pink-fishing site I read said "if you can't catch pinks, maybe you shouldn't be fishing." I'm starting to think they're talking about me. 😬

You are not alone! I spent 4 days in this area. Green buoy, Meadow point, Golden Gardens, Shoreline. Today got back home 10PM! No pinks, no cohos :( I have tried everything - buzz bombs 5 different kinds, rotator, hoochies, trolling with smelt, mooching. No luck! I think about changing the place. Looks like this area doesn't like me.  >:D

Good job - congrats! What time it was? And what method you use? Trolling? I have been in water for 5 hours today, catch nothing as always(
