No coho in the lake yet, even after Halloween weekend rain? Oh well, more heavy rain due this weekend.

If anyone is getting antsy to catch a Coho in a lake, I've heard more than one report of them being caught in Tahkenitch. Just a few miles south of Siltcoos.

out in my kayak all day Mon and Tue, then again Wed in our PB, have not seen any coho activity in Siltcoos yet, no jumps, rolls, or coho caught by other boats.  rumors of a few jacks caught in the river but that is it...I'll get more info tonight at our STEP meeting...might just hit Tahk on Thursday...roger

Roger, I wonder if the fall coho run failures to the north will also turn out to be the case in Silt and Tahk. If so, phooey.

lake is not high enough, the lack of rain all summer on the coast and not enough yet this fall.

report is that the dam is being opened a bit off and on this week to clear some debris out of the spillway...these coho have just a short distance to go and can come in very late, we will not know until end of December how large the lake coho runs are but so far they are not making the fishermen happy..

Hmmm. I was halfway thinking of giving it a try Tuesday, as Weather Underground is predicting more than 1.5 inches of rain Saturday and Sunday, but maybe it is still not time. It's nearly 6 hours of driving from Salem and back.

1- Westlake Launch is closed for repairs.
2- it is easy to launch a kayak at the Tyee campground launch, requires any Forest Service pass to park, you will be going against some current if the dam is open, about 1/2 mile to the lake.
3- lake level is dropping fast as of Saturday morning, I observed good numbers of fish moving up the river.

Just a note: The campground host at Tahk just posted this over on Ifish. GRRRRRR.
 Hi Folks.
Host Cindy, here, at Tahkenitch Landing Campground: a subsidiary of International Paper, in Eugene, controls the dam that feeds the sea-entry for sea-run fish. Presently, there is no response from the controller, Norbert Wondra, as to why IP is not releasing enough lake water into the creek to open the mouth. The lake is at a good level, but the creek's mouth is a trickle. The fish are holding at the creek’s mouth, unable to access the dam ladder. Meanwhile, sea lions and eagles are gorging on Coho and cutthroat--and have been for nearly two weeks.
Anyone want to do anything about their favorite fishing hole?
Contact IP and complain! The more squeaky wheels, the better.

I did check Tahkenitch creek this morning and agree, it was stagnant, no water moving at all.

still no big surge of coho into the lake this year, lots of SRC and a few jacks getting caught, we had one big coho takedown Monday that didn't stick, a friends boat had the same...lake very low now to help them repair the boat launch.  we are either seeing a very weak run or a very late run...I did take a 3# LMB out of the Fiddle Creek arm so he will not be eating anymore small salmon/trout!  and another 15" SRC into my freezer...
