Well to answer my own question, I just saw this: http://www.austinkayak.com/products/6117/YakAttack-Mighty-Mount-Scotty-241-Track-Mount-Kit.html. That would fix the issue with the "gear head" style loosening. Anybody use the mighty mount product in the link?

Yep. Attach it to various gear tracks on my Jackson. Very nice but note the rotation angle for the holder is in steps, not infinite.

Rudy, why do you prefer Folbe rod holders?  I need to rig-out the new, second-hand Revo and am curious about why you chose them over Scotty holders.

Catch anything else? I'm trying to make a trip to either Seward or Homer this week.

Where did you launch in Seward? I've never been down there to paddle, but I'm thinking about heading down in a couple weeks to check it out. Really pretty down there!

If you want a custom base which mounts on a gear track, it's easy to make your own.  See my posting at http://www.yakfisher.net/smffiles/index.php?topic=9917.0 , which is a spiffed up version of a posting I made earlier on this forum.

Right on! I was eyeballing that red one as well. Did you end up with any upgrades? I'm hoping to get out soon. Probably will head to Homer. Still need to install rod holders and such. See you out there!

Thanks guys, what would be the best option (if any) if I wanted to utilize the built in rod holders and not have to drill?
gotta drill sorry. I'm a huge Folbe fan but you can get

sorry. missed this. with the traditional holders a big fish will pin your rid into the holder. folbe and I hear the Scotty orcas are the same, you can get them out easily even on a big fish.

If that's the case, I can save my pennies.  Big fish and I seem to practice a mutual avoidance policy.

Thank you, Rudy.  Good to know.  I'm going to try for halibut this year on the offhand chance that one will break the treaty...

interesting design. are you saying that you havent had issues from a kayak or a boat? I like the simplicity of the striker but anything that requires the rod tip to be lifted may cause issues since you grab the rod from the side and not directly from behind.

but with the rotating back end, as long as you have a soft rod (which I hate) or loose drag (which I don't like on strike) I could see it working. with your new Hobie the rod will likely be perpendicular to the kayak since you can't have the butt of the rod sticking into the kayak.  that means you will be grabbing the rod from the side, not behind.

let us know how that system works for you. I always like trying new stuff out and my second kayak still has Scottie mounts.
