Not (Really) Kayak Related: I need to put a small magnetic hook on the roof of the car.  I have the hook and want to protect the car from the exposed metal magnet.

Anyone have experience with Plasti-Cote - or a better suggestion?

If you mean the stuff you dip tool grips in, it is pretty thick stuff. Depending on the strength of the magnet, that thickness can make the magnet not stick so well.

Have you considered a thin refrigerator magnet ? I mean as a cushion between your hookie thing and the roof. So long as the polarity is the same, should do well because its own magnetic field will help overcome its thickness. Same stuff is used to make removable signs for car doors. If your magnet is large, you can buy sheets of it at Fry's in the computer paper department that will go through an inkjet printer for making your own magnetic business cards.

Spray on Plasti-Dip will do the job.  You can get it in a bunch of colors, even clear.  I have used the product many times to waterproof things, toughen up the exterior, as well as make super flaming orange bouys with it.

I would say you could very successfully spay on the Plasti-Dip on in layers until you get the thickness you want.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a winner: thin rubbery refrigerator magnets!

I went fiddling around with it and when the polarities align, it actually increases the holding force of the hook-magnet a little bit.

Thanks, Pinstriper.

INSAYN, thank you, too.  I have a different project for which I'll use spray-on Plasti-Dip, now that I know it exists.  Before now I thought it only came in thick, brush-on (or dip-into) form.
