How does HDI differ from Down-Scan Image overlay?  It also allows you to see both a DSI and standard display at the same time.

HDI is actually Hybrid Dual Imaging

It allows you to run both standard sonar and DSI at the same time. You can run it split screen or over lay the two images , thus providing you with the traditional fish arches that we recognize and the better bottom structure image.

Too late. Due to customary internet procedure, my fake answer is now considered "truth" - because I posted it first. Ha ha.  (plus "high-def" is easier to remember than "hybrid dual")

Thanks for the correction Merby.

I just looked up the Hook series and it looks like it's very similar to the Chirp series. It sounds like they removed some non-essentials to make it easier to navigate and drop it into a lower price bracket. Not sure what the differences are, the online specs look very similar.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

I'm grateful that someone else can go, "Huh?" when trying to read the spec sheets.

Thank you all.  I think I've made up my mind about which series.  Now I just have to figure out what size.

BTW - it appears that the Elite-5 HDI is being discontinued.

What's different about the Hook series?

I honestly do not know.  Different front on the cases with little fish-arc graphics on the bottom right?

Lowrance introduced it as a budget-conscious line-up, but it's hard to get to enough detailed information - even in the manuals - to tell for sure what's different.

Lowrance in a nutshell:

Mark = Black & White
Elite = Color
4, 5, 7, etc = Screen Size
X = Non-GPS
DSI = Down Scan Imaging
HDI = High Definition (also has DSI functionality)
Chirp = Newest Sonor technology that all the companies are using as a marketing angle

Marked for reference.

Thank you for this.

Tinker,
Thanks for your help on battery selection. Here's the unit I'm waiting for:
