As the title says, what are some preferred areas for fishing? On or off the kayak... I've only fished the north end of silver primarily. I've gone on a few other lakes with no luck myself.

What are you wanting to fish for? There are a lot of lakes just south of Cheney that are great for trout.

Have you fished the Spokane River?  Or pot holes reservoir?

I don't really have a specific fish in mind, but trout, bass, and crappie/bluegill. Growing up we'd just throw out a worm for whatever would bite, it's been about 10 years since I've truly fished, maybe longer. I mostly have in line spinners and crankbaits. Another forum mentioned rock lake which seems like a good place to try out. This spring I fished the little spokane from st George's to nine mile take out, a lot of spots for the Spokane river seem to be catch and release and fly fishing. I'm all for catch and release but wanting to take some home too

Bonnie Lake is good for Crappie. Google it.  Rock Lake is excellent for German Brown, and they planted a ton of Rainbows last year.  Be careful on Rock if they are predicting high winds.  The wind channels down the lake and can make it very dangerous.  A couple of years ago Silver Lake was complaining about too many Bluegill, so they planted Tiger Muskie.  I never made it up there for either one.  If you are willing to travel, up the Palouse from the Snake is excellent for Catfish in the spring.  Also Potholes Reservoir is awesome for Walleye and Bass.

I fished cle elum last summer when camping, wind picked up and caused waves to push me around, waves were big enough they were going over the nose of my kayak. It definitely wasn't fun. Another forum said they put steelhead in rock lake too.

I don't mind traveling but would definitely make it a weekend or couple day trip to justify travel.
