So I know I have been getting a few questions from folks who haven't fished this area before.

I probably shouldn't be giving out my planning given this is a competition, but really for me to win is a stretch.  So what I would rather have as a goal, is maximizing the number of kings we can enter off a kayak.  I'd be ecstatic if one in 3 or 4 guys could enter a fish.  But there is always the chance the fish will be stacked in the area and how cool would it be if 10 kayakers entered 20 fish!  Remember, even for the powerboats its one fish of every 5 or 6 anglers.  But with a few new folks showing interest, I want to make sure if the stars align, we can really hammer the fish.  Ok, that's a dream.  it's more likely that we need every kayaker fishing efficiently as possible to just get a fish entered for the entire team.  So hopefully, this might help a few of the folks who are just getting into this.

Keep in mind, if you choose to take your time to read this, you are taking advice from a  guy who has been skunked two of the three years he has entered the derby.  LOL.  I do NOT put this out as a definitive piece by any stretch of the imagination.  But I would be curious to start a conversation here to where people have different opinions or may be kind enough to share a successful tactic or additional intel they have gathered.

If you have something to add or correct in what I think, SPEAK UP!  No pride here other than I don't want to get skunked!  So happy to hear everyones ideas!!

I also have an older "How to for the spit" but its more relevant for the September to November fishery. You might notice some of the advice is different.  Being so new at it, its ever evolving.  So things might be sightly different also given the emphasis on the fall fishery

Thanks Rudy, a ton of great information there.  I will be out of town and so won't be able to fish the tournament this year...but appreciate you sharing your wealth of knowledge with the rest of us.  Good luck!

Awesome read..... probably not doing this Derby... but i believe this approach would work well for the Nootka sound derby in British Columbia.... Thanks for the share!

Thanks Rudy for the info. I finally got a hotel booked so I am pretty sure I am in. I have had a rough winter health wise so I have not even ice fished this year but I am stoked for the derby.

Thanks all.

Ok, better give a little confidence that the fish are there.

Here's my youtube playlist for Homer Kings that I think might be relevant.
