This is really timely, as I'm hitting Tillymuck Bay with Mofo next weekend.

Then, I REMEMBERED !!! I bought http://www.austinkayak.com/products/4995/Promar-Collapsible-Crab-and-Fish-Trap-32x24x11.html last fall from AKC.

So I dug it out to see how it actually works, and.... CRAP. It doesn't have a way for crabs to escape if it is lost. I think I remember seeing as how you're supposed to have some way for a cotton string to rot away if unattended for a few days and then it opens and the crabs scurry away ??? Well, this ain't got that.

So, I'm back in the market for a compact crab trap that will fit on the bow of MY BRAND NEW OUTBACK (!!!!) - (although I would be willing to carry it aft, if enough people tell me that's what the kayak crabbing pro's do).

So I await the hive mind's deliberations on kayak crab traps with baited breath.

couldn't you replace a 4"x4" (or whatever regs demand) section of mesh with cotton twine?

A) Sorry, MOJO. Damn iphone kb!

And in the second place, I ain't no damned knitter. This thing is made of that plastic netting you throw over blueberry bushes to keep the birds off.

I trust your recommendation implicitly, Roger, but that thing is large and spendy. So I'm paused...

Everyone's mileage may vary, of course, but I've found using pots with non-metal, fibrous netting extremely frustrating. The damn crabs get so tangled up in there's it's a nightmare getting them out.

I got an extra danielson you can use but seen nothing in the Oregon regs about a rotting string on the trap.

it may not be legally required in OR, but you should do the ethical thing and make sure it has one anyways.

Although I read this page being aimed at the commercial folks, it still holds true for us recreational folks with ethics.

http://www.dfw.state.or.us/mrp/shellfish/commercial/crab/crab_pots.asp

With that, I can't see what would make it too difficult to add "rotten cotton" options to any enclosed crab trap.  Just be creative.  For example, on the one that Pinstriper has, just tie the trap shut with cotton twine rather than use the metal clips provided.  Eventually the cotton will rot and crabs can push their way out of the opening if you happen to lose the trap. Easy Peasy!

If you are in a bay it will quickly become mired in sand and mud or a diver will get them. I don't think sport pots are a large source of ghost kills here.

maybe not, but none is better than some. why not buy one with an escape hatch, or spend two minutes with some cotton twine and overhand knots and modify one without.

Because the metal clips is how you open and shut the thing to bait it and harvest or release the buggers. So it would be cutting and retieing the thing between drops.

If it weren't for the flimsy netting I could put some sort of shock cord spliced with cotton twine to close it, but the metal wire framing is pretty sparse.

As much as I'd like an awesome circular trap I'm gonna swing by Bi-Mart for a rectangular collapsible for $20 and call it good.
