I am pretty low on the knowledge of what catches what.  I know folks have their "secret" weapon, but there is always something common used for particular fish that I myself don' t know where to start.

I browse the fishing tackle isles and see this, that, and the other wiggly, shiny, noisy, sharp, etc... lures and such, but when I look on the back to see what it was intended for, all I see is the same notice stating:

Materials used to manufacture this product is known to cause cancer to Californians.

That's great and all that fishing gear companies go out of their way to poison those unsuspecting Cali's, but how does it help me pick the right lure for the right fish targeted.

How about time of the year for particular species, weight of the sinker to use, or  what this or that fish targets naturally.

Is there anything that is not so sacred in the fishing world that can't be shared here?

Say, jigging for rock fish - basic technique and some examples of lures.
Trolling for trout or Kokanee, mooching for this, or trolling cut herring for that.
I can read it, but it doesn't mean squat to me, as I haven't seen what it is, or how it is presented.

I'm not looking to reduce your years of experience down to a "How To" book, but more along the lines of starting point on theory, and/or what makes a lure or particular presentation work or not work.

Ever watch Alton Brown on the Food Network, he can cook elaborate dishes right, but he also can break it down to those that have no idea where to start.  He uses analogies and props to 'splain how food science works, and can get a newbie headed in the right direction without giving up all the personal twists of his own.

Is this request reasonable, or just as taboo as sharing a favorite producing fishing hole?

Great idea for a permanent thread, I would love some info on catching trout in lakes---very rusty and haven't used a fly rod since the 1980's---flies on the bubble?  Power bait/split shot marshmallow??
Maybe 2 threads, one for the salt and one for lakes and rivers??

Salt / Fresh separation would be a very helpful.

Pics of historically successful baits for various fish species, pics, vids and/or descriptions of the most common casting, jigging, rigging techniques all in one place would be very helpful for those that don't have 30-40 years of fishing experience behind them.

Another helpful item would be descriptions and uses for most hooks used in our area. There are so many hooks hanging on the fishing isles, I have no clue what 90% of them are for.  How about fishing lines weight (2#, 6#, 20#, 40# etc..), or line style (Mono, braided, etc..), as I'm sure there are better lines used for certain uses over others.

It would be cool to see it organized like a Wiki layout.
(I have no clue how that is done though, limited software skills).

I have used all the popular methods for trolling for trout. Ford Fender flashers, a 4 or 5
foot leader, and a size 8 bait hook with a piece of night crawler threaded on it always works for me. If you don't want all the hardware, just use a 4 lb leader with a size 8 hook, and a small split shot about a foot from the hook. Bait with the worm, and slowly paddle around until you get a trout. This is my favorite method, especially using an ultralight rod. There are other methods for bigger trout, but I caught my biggest German Brown, 24 inches and 4 lbs, on a size 8 bait hook with a worm.

Turman Tackle is based in Reedsport actually. I think it's in the old town part on highway 38. Not too long a drive. They have them here at Basin Tackle in Charleston and i'm sure they have them in other tackle shops.

I think a better option would be for us to start using the NWKA Wiki.

http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/wiki/

In particular, I thought we could have articles on each fishery including what to use tackle-wise.

http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/wiki/index.php/Fishery_Intel

Right now it's pretty empty, but any NWKA member is welcome to write/edit some articles for this.

Richard,

This might be your problem with catching fish.  You really need to start looking at fishing tackle as exactly that.. fishing tackle and not potential sex toys.

That particular lure is a good imitation of a small squid which to a rockfish is the equivalent of candy.

Brian, that is absolutely what I was thinking!  Never knew it existed.  Is it a sticky somewhere, and easy for members to locate, update and use?

Is there a chance those that have read thus far, please go into the link that BSteves just provided and possibly fill in areas that you are familiar with.  Trade secrets and favorite that you don't want others to know, don't add.  Simple instruction (text, pic, or video), of typical jigs, lures, hooks, baits, lines, or explanation of commonly used fishing techniques is all that is needed.

I read through this and other fishing sites, magazines, or watch on TV, and alot of the terms used for rigging, or fishing a particular fish, sound like a different language.

Until I actually see what they are talking about, or get instruction from other's that are willing to show, I would hit all waters with the same bait, tackle and the limited techniques that I know for trout fishing.  Waste of tackle and time, and fishing gets boring due to lack of catching of any fish.   I can catch trout, and some salty bottom fish, but that's about it.

How about adding a Wiki link to the tabs section along the top of the page?
