Seems like you could make some sort of a lid.

I'm looking for something I can put between my knees since I'm not mobile enough to turn around in the Yak without hanging my legs over the side.  I definately prefer my gear in front of me.

Wife wanted to browse the Goodwill today that I went to yesterday, so I tagged along.  Found another crate for $0.99.  This one says "DARIGOLD" on it.   It wasn't there yesterday, as it was on their employee cart that was labeling and placing items on the shelves.

I think this one will go on the front rack of my 4x4 ATV.

If I find many more at this price, I think I will cut the bottom out of one and make it a lid for the one I will put on the yak.

There were even several really nice small hard coolers there for a few bucks each.

Moral here is to check your local Goodwill stores.

I was in Coos Bay yesterday so I stopped by Fred Myers and picked up a crate. It seems strong enough, I guess I will see how it holds up once I get it out on the water. It is about an inch wider then I would like so it doesn't sit perfect on the kayak, but it will work.
I rigged up my crate with two PVC rod holders and a soft cover tackle box with plastic insert. I also made two paddle leashes out of a cheap phone cord and climbers clips. I have to say, rigging the yak is ALMOST as fun as being out in it.
Coosbayyaker, I don't need the crate any more, but I will take you up on your offer to go fishing. I would love to get out to Sunset bay with you if the ocean ever cooperates. I was out there last weekend but didn't make it much past the mouth as the conditions were not great, it was my first time on the salt and I was alone.
Enjoy the ride!

Yikes!  Don't think I will be doing any salt runs alone without a buddy for quite awhile.  I don't even ride easy trails or dunes without a buddy on another ATV, and I have 20 years experience riding just about any terrain.   Not bust'n your chops here, just in awe of your motivation.  Once I get my yak, I'll be happy to hit Cape Kiwanda with ya!

Sure. Sunday might be a possible day,Early before the wind picks up:

.SUN...N WIND 20 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 5 TO 8 FT. MIXED SWELL NW 3 TO 4 FT AND SW 2 FT. PATCHY FOG IN THE MORNING.

The first time i went out by myself i was kinda nervous about going to far, but now I have no problem going by myself all the way to the outside. Last week i pedaled out about a half mile past the outside rocks cause the fishing sucked and i was bored. Maybe a trip to orford merlin? Zac would enjoy some company on his side of the world i'm sure.

I go riding my Quad by myself too, but am very careful when i do.
See ya on the water..

If ya wonder why my handle is "INSAYN", there is reason.

It's like know you have a drinking problem and know better than to drive to the bar.  I like to do wheelies, climb steep stuff, and jump.  I know better than to ride alone when I know I can't resist.  It even stems all the way to my old daily driver '74 VW Baja.

Ooooh there's a jump, and there's another.  Better hold on, this one might hurt.

Roughly 15 of these jumps in a row, and this was the closest my wife would get to riding in my car with me.  She took the pics.   :laughing7:

This one was over 6' off the ground, and bent the front suspension, blew a rear shock, and dropped the battery through the floor upon landing it.  Completely stock seats, seat belts, shocks, and suspension.  Just had bigger tires and lifted fenders.

Unfortunately that car is dead.  Was stolen last Sept from my house, and stripped to its shorts and left for dead.  Found the car a week later in a huge ditch.

I still have the car, but currently selling off everything I have that is VW and moving away from the baja hobby.

I am trying to down size some of my hobbies, and bring the others together.  Kayaking and kayak fishing will blend right in with my camping, and ATV'ing hobbies.     ;D

Not sure if it has been said yet, but get a crate that has the metal reinforcement in the rim, especially if you're going to be attaching rodholders and the like to it.  Many of the cheapo ones you can find at the "storage" places don't have this.  Most of the crates used in the food service industry (milk crates) have this.  Years ago I started with a milk crate that was 1.5X normal size with a metal reinforced rim and it lasted a long time.

I second that. I got one thats not exactly a cheapy but it doesn't have a metal rim and the rim is cracked already. My buddy ralph has one with the metal band and you can just tell it will last much longer.

I am taking the family camping along the siltcoos this weekend, but I will have the following Sunday through Wednesday off and would do either a Sunset or port orford trip with ya one of those days if you can make it.
Enjoy the ride!

Did you look into the crates at umpqua dairy CBY? If they have the metal support then maybe I will retire my Fred Myers crate before it ever gets used.
Enjoy the ride!
