I was loading the kayak I borrowed from C_Run at the launch site below the bridges in downtown Corvallis, when a squirrel ran across the launch area, closely pursued by a mink.  They zig-zagged back and forth across the area, at one point running about three feet from a guy who was sitting in the door of his car, changing his shoes, and then disappeared into some bushes.  A couple seconds later, the squirrel started screaming.  I peered into the bushes, and could see the mink subduing the squirrel, but couldn't get a picture because they were in the shadows and obscured by branches.  The squirrel kept screaming for 30-45 seconds before the mink finished it off.  I was surprised the squirrel didn't run up into a tree, where it would probably have had an advantage over the mink.

Wow! Only in Oregon!  Mink is good crabbing bait.....  wonder if squirrel is good bait.
Was it a mink or river otter?  I've seen a few river otters that were pretty mean (attacking ducklings and even seagulls) but I didn't know mink were that aggressive.
Hope you had a good float.

Send that mink down here. The gray squirrels are stripping all the bark of our maples this year!
