Broke my 4 weight today.  I bought it used and it's not going to be covered under any kind of warranty.  Bah!

For a replacement, I'm choosing between a TFO Professional II and a Redington Classic Trout.  Either would work fine.  I like them both.

I don't use a rod this light more than a few days a year, and lower-cost rods are going to be fine - but I don't know if either has an inherent problem (like known to break easily) and I don't know how each company handles warranty claims.

Any experience?  Thoughts?

You can't go wrong with the Reddington Classis Trout. It's a great rod.

Thanks.

Yeah, I like it too.  Just wondering if it has a problem - like when the TFO BVK's tended to snap at the tip for no apparent reason.

What's the break look like, Tinker? A lot of broken rods can be repaired fairly easily.

About three inches near the middle of the top section bulges outwards like it delaminated as it crumpled and bent.  It didn't snap into two pieces.

I found the rod at an estate sale and paid very little for it, so losing it isn't a tragedy - except the season opens on the coastal streams in nine days and I'd like to have a rod by then.

It was an unused Fenwick HMG - I guess it still is an HMG, even broken.   ;)  I might look into having it repaired, but for now I'm looking for a replacement.

I probably wouldn't bother repairing a 3" crush in the tip section of an estate sale rod. To do the repair, you need a piece of donor blank that will fit inside the damaged section. You also have to wrap thread over the break and finish it, so imagine a 3-4" ferrule wrap over this break. It can be done with thread that turns clear under the finish, but a wrap over that much of a break is going to look bad, no matter how well it's done.

Sounds like looking for a replacement is your best bet.

I think so, too.  Should have mentioned it's one of the old HMG rods, not a newer one, and a repair would probably cost several times more than what I paid for it.  Seems odd that I've tugged harder to free practice flies from the lawn, but ce sera.

Appreciate the suggestion, 'though.  It might have worked-out.
