X-posted from NCKA. You guys got any ideas?

...

I've set up a downrigger on my kayak.  I want it on my left, with the rod on a ram mount on a gear track on my right.  THe problem is when the downrigger pulls on the rod, it torques the ram ball and unscrews the ball, moving the rod.

Can anybody think of a quick fix?

The thing I'd like is a bolt with a left hand thread, but I haven't found such an animal.  WIth a left hand thread the torque would simply tighten down, so it would not move so long as I had it already sufficiently torqued down.

This problem also happens when I run a rod without the downrigger.  If I run it off the left side across the yak, it's fine.  Again, it just torques the bolt tighter and isn't an issue.  I don't want to set up my rod on that way though, I want to run it the other way.

DO you guys have any ideas?

I looked at that. Bookmarked it a while ago. I don't want the DR on the right because I have a 2015 revo and the paddle is on the right. I don't want to block access to the paddle, seems like a bad idea. I do like your setup though.

Do like Pete and figure out a way to secure the rod holder with two bolts to counter the torque. Don't hold your breath for left-hand thread mighty bolts, because it's never going to happen.

Grainger carries left threaded rod,

Several places on the net sell left threaded bolts, should be able to find something that works.

Good luck

Over at the n+cka thread there were lots of ideas and solutions but I can't get over the idea that the simple ram screwball or scotty gearhead with the LH thread is simply a better mousetrap.  The bolts and balls could be a different color to distinguish standard and reverse threads and simply place them according to the expected direction of torque force on the unit.  Done and done.

Instead we;ve got heavy duty ramball mounts with pins to prevent slippage that don't have great reviews, or we have mighty mount rail adapters for scotty bases that attach at two points but are bulky and cost at least 3 times as much as a gearhead or screwball.  Then there are other manufacturers for other rail systems that have other unnecessarily elaborate and expensive ways to mount gear.

What about a diamond-foot ram ball, t-nuts and appropriately sized stainless bolts?

That's a better idea than the HD yakattack ram ball with the retention pin.  It might even work with mighty bolts and stainless wing nuts.  I wonder about the potential of things catching on the underside of the diamond base on either side of the rail.  Might need to trim those down to minimize the chances.

This is a good idea, thanks.

That idea makes too much sense, it is surprising that none of the mfg's make a left threaded mount for the "other" side of the kayak.

Oohh boy I could see a few guys at 0:dark30 trying to put a right hand threaded bolt into a left hand head or versa-vice. It would be very entertaining for thoes that are watching.

I ran into the same problem with my Scotty Gear Head Track Adapter while salmon torlling. I like the rod on my right and extending across my body fishing on the left. I couldn't use a diver or troll too fast or it would loosen up.  It did come in handy as a strike indicator, though. I caught two salmon by having the rod smack me in the forehead when I was looking down and digging in my hatch. I have since made a track adapter for the Scotty Locking base and am very happy with it. That and the slip disks have made me a happy salmon fisherman.

What do you like about the Scotty slip disks, and what do you use them for?

I'm going to try the single version out this weekend.  I've heard complaints about unreliable function of the retention pins.  I also like the suggestion (pmmpete I think?) to have the FF and rod tip on the same side for ease of monitoring both.  It also isn't any real cost savings over the mighty mount rail adapter unless the ram balls pictured but in clear are included as well?

Btdt...

I I have used the single pin Yak Attack Ram ball for my rod holder and a screw ball for the ff. This works ok, but I will admit it could be a little heavier duty. Hasn't failed... but their is some flex in it, but it doesn't untwist either. Outside of going to the double Mighty Mount , I am trying the Stealth Rod holder that has the geartrax built in ($17.99)  https://www.stealthrodholders.com/products/2-point-track-mount-coming-soon

So far I like it a lot. but I miss the benefits of the ram ball.
