My buddy and I loaded the boats and hit Detroit Lake today.  We wanted to try out some new equipment in prep for Pacific City.  The idea was to paddle from Mongold Launch west toward the dam in the morning, then ride the afternoon whitecaps back to the launch.

The weather was too nice.  At 11AM it was glass and no wind.  We paddled west and began trolling for trout as soon as we hit the mouth of the Blowout arm.  Alot of MB were congregated here.

The trolling was rewarding.  We used a 3/4 ounce bullet weight, snap swivle, two ft. leader, slipped on a single red bead, and then the treble hook (worm).  Slow trolling withing 50 feet of shore around the mouth has always produced trout.  Alot of people were catching fish.

We paddled on down to the Kinney Cr. Arm and pulled into the first cove on the left. Kinney Cr. has a very cool waterfall hidden about 200 feet back from the high water line.

The waterfall lands in one nice deep water carved out bowl that flows down a smooth rock waterslide.  My buddy slid down the rock (not on pourpose), and into/under a huge fallen Doug Fir.  Sorry I had to dime you out!  No injury.

There were a bunch of large crawdads munching on a fish, we harvested some for bait but didn't catch anymore trout.

Our trip back to the ramp was supposed to be a wild ride due to the usually very predictable afternoon winds.  I couldn't believe the usual windwipped four foot swells were not to be had!

We hope the gear we have works.  I would dime myself out if I did anything noteworthy.  Oh, I forgot.  I stood up on my yak again and tried to make a sail out of an old army poncho.  Look...IM SAILING, IM SAILING!!!

We found some Huckleberry bushes that were loaded with fat juicy berries.

The new equipment we brought (not using because it was too hot!) consisted of neoprene shorty wet suits, neoprene gloves, white water splash pants, and whitewater pull over jackets.  We are putting together our gear for the derby and just wanted to see how it functioned.  My buddy said we could always just stand in the yard with the sprinkler on.

I know we need pics, we knew we should have brought a digital.  We just both forgot.  I think a cheapo is in order just in case it goes overboard, like a walkabout I owned did.

Thats exactly why we hesitated on bringing the cameras.  Digitals are getting sooo cheap- I may purchase one as a disposable just in case it fries, otherwise purchasing a real waterproof cam is in order.

Mybuddy and I are getting some good info on equip from the club here, we knew we would take heat for going on trip and describing fish we caught...without providing "proof of life".  Ha Ha
