When I purchased my outback second hand it came with an aftermarket paddle and while it works just fine on short little bursts getting away (or into) shallow water. I discovered this weekend that the paddle is drastically too short causing me much grief when paddling any distance (had packed the mirage drive in the car already and needed to paddle 50yd or so to the boat ramp.) I don't need anything fancy, but want to pick up one more appropriately sized for the barge. Of course the outback isn't great for paddling anyway, but with the short paddle it made it even worse. From what I've read the stock hobie paddles have been relatively crappy ever since they added the mirage drives (other opinions differ.) Regardless I will likely pick up a relatively inexpensive bending branches paddle in the preferable size. Without measuring I am guessing my current paddle is a 210 or 220cm model.

Can anyone with a bit more experience in this area assist in recommending a length of paddle appropriate? Of course this is not intended to be my primary method of propulsion, but when necessary it's nice to have something a bit better suited for the job.

all our Hobie paddles are the same 91" length.  We have three Revos (11-11-13) and one Outback.
Paddles work fine for us but if I wanted to really do some paddling, I'd buy a Werner.

While I don't have a Hobie (yet), my Emotion is 33" wide and I use a 240cm and it is perfect

That's good to hear, same width as the outback so it should work fine I would think. I was thinking 230 or 240cm so maybe I'll just size up, it's only a few inches more.

You may win a Werner at the ORC if you are coming. You better hold off on buying. Have confidence. ;)

Since it's a back up id suggest a bending branches whisper in 230 or 240 depending on how tall you are. They're about 60 bucks at REI and very durable. Plus since its REI you can return it if you don't like the size.

Thanks guys. The 240 it is. I will definitely check out REI for any deals. I think we have a dividend there as well. If not then I'll definitely shop around... I definitely won't be holding out for the ORC prize, it will be only my second or third time kayak fishing in the ocean... maybe beginners luck... you never know!
