I got hung up while fishing this last week and ended up snapping the rod I usually use for blacks and lings.  Luckily I brought my salmon rod as a backup, so I ended up using it for most of the day: I actually enjoyed using that rod way more.  I want a new rod that is durable and sensitive so I can feel the bites more like I could with the salmon rod.  I'm looking to spend around $100 or less, but willing to splurge a bit for the right one.

Any suggestions?
Dave

+1 on the Shimano Trevala S 30-40lb rating.  Amazingly light, sensitive, awesome action, and I have landed tons of black rocks, and big lings and it handles like a charm.  I can comfortably fish with up to 5 oz of lead without any issue.  I rarely use more than 3-4 oz in total anyway, otherwise at the end of the day, my arm is ready to fall off.  I picked up a second one for little Cos last week to match mine at Fish Field in Tigard.  They were having a 15% off any Shimano rod sale.

I like my meat crane but it's more of a halibut rod. Penn Mariner 5ft

Anyone that has tried a Trevala knows its the bees knees and hands down my new favorite. That being said I'm loving the new GX2 series Ugly Stick casting rods! Has the same feel and come in around $40. Check them out at your local Wal-Mart or Bi-Mart.

Add: The "Heavy" is a broomstick. but manageable. The MH 6'6" is ideal and comes in either 1 or 2-piece.

Hey Dave, give some thought to what reel you want to use with the combo. Having a jigging rod that is mostly neutral in your hand (with reel installed) makes for a pretty nice day of jigging. Trevala's are very nice but there are plenty of other good sticks around. Daiwa makes a nice one as does Tica.

The Trevala sure seems popular, I've heard others talk about them also.

Noah, I'm planning on using the Daiwa Lexa 300 I had on the old rod...not exactly sure what the perfect match for that real would be, but I'll be doing a bit of looking around and reading before I buy.

Thanks for the advice recommendations guys.

Daiwa Saltiga G  -- SAG-J66MF  1pc 6'6" line weight 15-40lb   I also have the trevala, but I think this is "better" maybe just a wee bit lighter and more power or just that I've wanted one and I'm worth it. ;D

+1 on the TREVALA rods.  My only issue is I broken the tips off of two of my rods...never fishing. Seems odd.   I have been playing with a couple of the Seeker rods but they are just too pricey for the way I treat my gear.

Someone mentioned the ugly stick GX2 series.  I bought one.  I have used it once, and I was amazed at how light, strong, and stiff it was.  I need to use it some more...hard to do when you have Shimano and Seeker rod's that cost three to ten times more than the ugly stick but why should price matter if it works as well...uh...because I am an angler with all the associated angler addiction and arrogance...lol.

another +1 on Trevala. Wasn't sure if it could hold up because of the small diameter, but I love it. Nice parabolic action. It pairs up perfectly with my Truth reel.

You can jig this rod all day long effortlessly.  It has great response and telegraph's every bump but has the power to make small work of BIG halibut.

+1 on the Trevala.  I have the ML Casting 7'.  Works for almost everything I fish for in the ocean.  Depending on the length of your yak, you may need a 7 ft or even longer rod to work around the bow on occasion
