Getting geared up for the Classic. Who's got a local source for a harpoon worthy of kayak fishing? All the ones I've seen are either ridiculously expensive or too long to be effective.

I've got a 4 iron with your name on it if you want to go the cheap/simple route. Works for me. Let me know how long you want it and I'll cut it for ya. You can get a good harpoon tip/buoy/rope at donalsons.

I'm guessing he'll want it for at least one full season is fishing, but would bet he wants it longer then that.

Right now the Cabelas in Anchorage has telescoping harpoons with a tip included on sale for $53. They are usually $90. With no extension they are about 4.5' or 5' long, not sure what they telescope out to, but it probably doesn't matter from a kayak. Should be pretty easy to handle. They look to be pretty sturdily built, I think they are pretty similar to the ones I have seen in Rudy's videos.

Golf club handles are a great idea. Do you add weight to them to give a little more striking power? Maybe pack the handle with BBs or lead shot? Whatever the standard length you make will suffice. I don't have a power boat so it will only be used on the yak.Are you fishing the Classic?

I machine an insert and make a point for them.
Ryu is using the one Rudy won last year.

I don't add any weight, it's solid graphite so that would take some ingenuity. I'll bring it to the classic. I'm planning on heading down the morning of so I could get it to you as soon as I get there. Or if you happen to be in the Kenai area before then...

Awesome! I'd be interested in getting one. How much do you charge and where can we meet?

Yah baby!  They are sweet!  Much easier to get through.  The harpoon tip is thinner than standard.  Light.  No need for additional weight.  Goes through the halibut like a hot knife through butter!  Thanks Ripndrag!!!!!

If you have scuba gear you might be able to find mine out at WG at slack tide. It was a Franken-poon made from a Cabelas fiberglass gaff handle, cut down with a Danielson harpoon tip installed in place of the gaff hook. It was a really slick stick, and I took it out without floatation. Bye bye!

Now I'm using the $25 or $30 rake-handle 'poon from Sportsman's Warehouse. I cut a foot or two off the handle, and put enough pipe insulation on to make sure it floats if it goes overboard.

I've only used it once but it stabbed the heck out of a 15 or 20-pounder on Memorial Day weekend.
