I am a student at Humboldt State University and I'm doing a marketing project for my marketing class.  My group has chosen a new kayak fishing jacket as our product to market.  I found this website and I figured that you all could be of some assistance to me.

I would really appreciate it if you could just reply to this post with answers to my questions.  You don't have to answer them all if you don't want to, anything would help.  Thank you so much!!

Male or Female?
Age?
River, ocean or lake kayak fishing?  Why?
What is the biggest draw to kayak fishing?  Next biggest?
Where do you live?
(this can be very vague...just the country and state or region.  i.e. northwest U.S.)

Thanks again, this means a lot to me...Also if you all know of anywhere that I can find more information and/or statistics on kayak fishing please let me know.  That would be wonderful.  ;D

What sort of stats are you looking for?

Can you tell us more about this jacket?  And can we see your final report when it is done?

thank you so much for your help!  the jacket is made by kokatat and is set to debut in 2009.  it is called the Tempest Jacket and it is specifically for kayak fishing.  some of the specifics include: TROPOS fabric, hooded pullover, APT collar, skirted to mate with pants, 3M reflective tape on hood and sleeve, left sleeve pocket with reflective tape, adjustable bungee self fabric hem allows easy on/off and factory sealed seams.  my final project won't be finished until the end of the semester in december, but i'll try to post it then.

as far as statistics go...percentage of the U.S. population participates in kayak fishing,  what percent is male, what percent is female...pretty much just numbers and percentages.  i found some good stuff through outdoor industry foundation, but i'm still looking.

thanks again!

*Lakes; Ocean next season (why: skill level & equipment req'd)

*(1.) The overall experience... fishing from a kayak is similar to commuting on a motorcycle; take only what you need and enjoy being closer to the world around you. (2.) Economy

In response to your survey:  Male, 49, All the above, excitement / adventure & fishing access to the ocean.  I live in Gresham, Oregon, USA.

I bet if you offered a free jacket as a raffle prize for filling out the survey you might get more response.  I hope that would be legal!  Good Luck - amb

mostly rivers because I haven't tried the ocean yet (soon) and lakes are boring to me
paddling, quiet, solitude, getting wet, catching a big fish from a small vessel (occasionally)

as much as i would like to get more participation and raffle off a jacket as well, i'm only a student.  i can't afford to buy one to raffle and since i'm not working with or for the company, i don't think that they will donate one towards the cause...sorry.  good idea though.  thank you to all those participating! : )

I fish rivers, lakes, and some ocean.  River (Willamette, Columbia) because they are very close to where I live, lakes in the Cascades for trout and scenery, and ocean (including tidewater bays) for salmon, crabbing, and scenery.  I got into kayak fishing to enjoy some peace and quiet while exploring beautiful places.

Biggest drawback is the limited range (can't paddle 5 miles up stream against the tide to get to the upper bay if the lower bay isn't fishing well), limits to fishable waters (I live near the Columbia River, which flows too high and fast to kayak fish in the spring), and competition with other boat transportation (jet skis, high speed boats, etc...) that make kayak fishing less enjoyable.

So rweseloh... how did you decide to pick this jacket for your project?  Are you or is someone in your group currently a yak fisherman or planning to be one?

well, we wanted to pick a local company for one.  and two, i know some people who work at kokatat and i know that they're trying to encourage kayak fishing with their new line.  we wanted a new product that hadn't yet been released; hence, the Tempest Jacket.

Creeks, Lakes, Rivers, Tidewaters, Ocean

My original reason was to fish ocean spots I couldn't reach from shore.
My revised reason is that it makes me feel exactly the way I felt when I was 10 y/o and built a little fishing/exploring raft out of a pallet and as many coconuts as I could fit underneath.  It's my map back to neverland.

Biggest Draw?  Versatility

2nd Biggest?  Gaining access without overwhelming my environment.

All of them, if they have fish. ::)

I like the adventure and challenge. I also like the environmental intimacy. >:D

well none as of yet but will be all of the above lol
mostly salt water though because i live so close to it

I think the biggest draw for me to kayak fishing (this is coming from someone who just bought a kayak and hasn't gotten a chance to fish from it yet but imagining here) is it is more of a challenge...and when i jump in the kayak it is powered by me...when i catch a fish it was only caught by me...when i carry it back it was on my boat powered by my feet :)....im not drawn by environmentalism such as carbon footprint but i do feel like i would be more a part of the environment in doing it

second biggest is definitely exercise lol
