Just got a quick Mirage Drive question.

I am going camping out in Hood Canal for 4 days. I'm worried about not being able to rinse my mirage drive after each use. Is this a big concern? Will the drive rust if I dont rinse it for a couple days?

Any answers are appreciated.

Faghedaboudit!

4 days isn't going to kill it. If you are real concerned you could rinse it off stuff at camp (assuming there is water). But honestly, I've been eyeballing a rinse kit (http://www.rinsekit.com/) for this type of thing that I'm sure I would use a lot for many other things as well.

I also would not worry about it, hit the cable ends and nuts with some WD40 if you want to be extra diligent and keep them shiny.

Even better, take your cable and chains off the Mirage drive and place them in a food sealer bag.
Then add a few tablespoons of Corrosion-X to the bag.  Allow the food sealer to evacuate most of the air out, and then seal it.

Let this sit overnight for the oil to soak into the cables and nooks and crannies of the chains.

Take them out, wipe off the excess oil and reinstall on your Mirage drive.

This Corrosion-X will protect the metal MUCH MUCH better and longer than WD-40 hands down.

I just started using a 2-gallon hand pump garden sprayer (without a spray tip) to clean off my 16' Revo.  Two gallons of water will do the whole boat plus fishing gear.  Probably not as nice as a rinse kit or battery powered sprayer, but for $20 it gets the job done.

Preventive treatment like INSAYN suggests is such a good idea I'm going to do it my drives before my next salt trip.

I just pull the truck into the driveway and hose everything down. I am hoping the is sufficient.

On a related note, what is the lube/grease plan for the drive ? I can see some blue-ish creamlike grease I assume is some sort of marine grade lithium grease, does that need to get reapplied regularly ?

That blue-ish creamlike grease is carefully collected toe jam from between Mojo Jojo's toes.

I reapply that crap to my Mirage drive at least once a year.  The drive is really easy to pull a part, and the annual spa day will keep it flipping like it was new.

 (Yes marine grease)

I thought you just used that on your peanut butter sandwiches, no more for you.

We fished the salt in Mexico for 10 days plus road time back up and had no issues with salt. The tackle on the other hand did not fare so well.

Great idea with the Corrosion X.

On a related note, what is the lube/grease plan for the drive ?

I use the Silicon Water-resistant WD-40 product. I rinse religiously, and apply the spray lube every other trip or so.

I've used Corrosion X since it first came out for marine and weapons corrosion protection.  Never thought of the vacuum seal idea but will use it in the off season for both sports. Thanks for the tip.

To answer the original question: a non-rinse option is to take a spray bottle of Salt-Away (properly diluted) and spray down the metal drive components after each use. This will help keep the salt from doing its job. You can get it at marine stores or order on Amazon. A bottle will last a looooong time using it this way.

What is in Salt-Away that makes it more effective than water?

It is 70-90% pure distilled dyhydrogen monoxide. That stuff is extremely rare from what I understand. :) http://www.saltaway.xyz/MSDSPage.htm
