What is in Salt-Away that makes it more effective than water?

I don't know the answer to that question and I'm not much of a chemist. But the explanation they give is that it binds to (some of) the salts in saltwater rendering them less chemically active. I remember reading a thread (elsewhere) a long time ago where someone had bothered to isolate the active ingredient and it was some commonly available chemical. Given how long a bottle lasts I don't mind just buying it in the jug and following the directions.

I use it on any metal on my kayak, on my drive, and on my fishing gear. I've been very happy with the results. It seems fairly inert; it has been tested and does not hurt fishing line (mono or braid), paint, metal, plastic, etc.

Forum user Lee also uses it in similar fashion for his gear IIRC; I think he dunks his reels in a bucket of it after use in the salt.

Sulfamic acid.  Not as effective as hydrochloric acid, but it won't kill you if you mix it with bleach!  That "surface active agent" referred to in the MSDS would be more commonly known as "soap".

It is 70-90% pure distilled dyhydrogen monoxide. That stuff is extremely rare from what I understand. :) http://www.saltaway.xyz/MSDSPage.htm
That's hilarious!

Yeah I  carry a tote full of diluted salt away.  I dip all my gear,  then use my bilge pump to spray the boat down.  Everything is dry and ready to put away when I get home.
