Me and my body Eugene got together to take a trip to Depoe Bay OR... didnt even go to sleep yesterday because of a long ride and early start for ORC. So we came like 4:30am at a dock and what i see is a empty parking lot and a funny flashing lights at the ramp... so we wait till 5 and realized that its was a real fail... ocean not in a mood today... and so we went back home... and there is nothing on a forum that's would tell us ORC got canceled  :(

the ocean went to shit friday afternoon.  it was great tues/wed/thur.  friday morn. no so good but doable and the bar was unrestricted. the bar went to restricted this morning or later friday. sorry. look at forecast real close( i use noaa and magic seaweed -lincoln city)  a couple days before u go and especially day before. did u? u may know already but as someone told me once(after a few trips similar to yours)....look for swell around 4 or less. light winds. still not the expert at forecasts but this helped me alot i can go abit bigger but prefer forecasts like this for sure.

I'd been following the ORC threads and questions, even though I was not participating in the event.  Sorry you drove so far to discover the event was cancelled.  But, There was a captains meeting on Friday evening (did you attend that or follow up with another captain that did attend?) - supposedly, that's when the event decision was made.  The ocean (as dampainter said) decided by Friday that it wasn't fishable == the forecast and bar restrictions would have prevented any kayaks from launching.  There is a Depoe Bay Coast Guard number that you could have called to find out if the bar was restricted.  Also, the online bar report observations (link posted in the ORC threads) should have also clued you in to a No-Go for the event.   Chinook Bend Campground still hosted the taco feed and raffle -- you should have gone there to participate in the off water aspects of the event.

There was a whole bunch of forum threads with information regarding the event such as weather, potluck, raffle, captain's meetings rules etc...

This one was posted up about 48 hours prior to the event.
