Does anyone use mysterioso?

i read reviews about it and have seen nothing bad about it...sounds to good to be true lol....

when you guys use a wetsuit do you wear anything over it? if so what is the advantage

im in such a toss up of what to buy...the pros...the cons...and all of that stuff for each one...i just can't decide lol

after reading a thread ThreeWeight wrote i am seriously thinking about the waist high waders and a dry top....but then i say well i could just get a wet suit...but then i would be wet....then i say chest highs for versatility....just too many options lol

i think either way base layer is gonna be mysterioso

next topic is shoes...what to do for shoes lol...do you guys go for dry shoes or wet shoes...any particular model or brand of shoes that work great....remember i have a hobie so i am gonna be using my feet alot

I've used both wet suit booties and Chaco sandals for my Hobie Mirage---downside of the booties is you always have 1/2 cup of water sloshing around, gets old after a couple hours.  The Chacos are great, your feet mostly dry out, and can get a little cold, depending on the weather/wind.

For shoes most of the year (cold water), I've gone to these

from NRS http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2335&deptid=1169. They have a rigid enough sole for protection while hiking/portaging and they work great with stocking foot waders.

For warm water paddling, use whatever you are comfortable in.

Ya i was looking at those shoes...looks like they would do a pretty good job keeping your feet warm

im definitely trying to gear up for cold water because almost all of my paddling will be in the sound...and winter is coming lol

I've been using wet shoes. Great when you dock launch or when it's warm out, but when it's cold and there wet my feet get really cold.

A dry suit would be optimum but there so pricey because a relief zipper would seem a must, i can't really afford 600 to over 1000 bucks.

I'm thinking about getting a thin spring suit and some chest waders for winter.

Or maybe this to wear under the chest waders:

Mysterioso?  YES!  I wear a shorty john 3mm wetsuit under neck to toe Mysterioso. I've only had the set for about 6 months, and worn it under varying circumstances.  At air temps in the mid 60's, I didn't over heat unless I was really going at it (pedal power).  Would have been nice to have a zipper.  Even when I did sweat, the wicking action was everything that had been claimed and I was dry at my core very quickly.  I've done several self rescue exercises in it as well, and it works quite well.  It doesn't expand when wet and clings to skin nicely.  Slides over plastic Hobie hulls quite well also.  Dries very rapidly and is thick enough to slow water seepage.  In cold-ish water I didn't experience cold water breathing shock at all.

I was out in Ross Lake this weekend (1000ft. elevation, 62deg water temp at surface, 59 air temp) and fished through some really healthy rain and was just fine.  Wet, but just fine.  I did get a little cold in feet and hands when the wind picked up (10mph or so), but I was wearing Mysterioso socks and no gloves.  I tend to dangle my feet out of the 'yak as a drift chute (still need one of those) when I was bank fishing, so my feet were constantly wet.

If I were to sum it up, I'd put my family in Mysterioso and a wetsuit before I'd put them in waders, no question.

P.S. - Ross Lake fishing report as soon as I get home from work and have photos  ;D

-edit-

I have yet to try and wear the Mysterioso under my wetsuit......

as far as a rash guard...I wear a t-shirt under me full wetsuit.
my shoes of choice are too easy....
warm - Crocs
cold - $20.00 Thilos booties with socks
I also use a pair of water blocker socks at times, but they are spendy and last a season or two at most before failing.

I have not, but after seeing the funk eating action of it up in AK this year (a couple of the other guys were using it), I'm thinking about giving it a go next year.

when you guys use a wetsuit do you wear anything over it? if so what is the advantage

When I used a wetsuit, I'd sometime wear rain gear over it when it was cold out.  This cuts down on the evaporative cooling effects which will make you even colder than just being wet.

A lot of people start with a wetsuit and move up over time and use various combinations as conditions allow.  It's not a bad tact.  However, here in the NW, a set of waders can come in handy (river fishing, beach fishing, etc.) so a lot of fishermen already have those.

Depends on what I am wearing.  With a wetsuit or a dry suit (with built in socks) I use booties (just a cheap pair of 7 mm ones).  With waders (with neoprene socks) I wear wading shoes although they feel a bit bulky in the kayak.

And a dry top.
Any feedback on the pants would be nice. Thanks...

This last weekend was my first trip on the ocean in my kayak.  I wore a wetsuit and boots with rain gear pants and a windbreaker jacket and pfd.  I was fine and enjoyed the time on the ocean.  I'll refine my gear as I get better at this.  Meanwhile the plan is to still have fun

If you're going with the wetsuit approach you'll want some neoprene booties.

If you go with the wader approach, I find that cheap Croc knock-offs in a size too large work well.  They're light and protect your wader's socks from abbrasion when you're walking your kayak down to the water.

Check out Kayak Academy (http://www.kayakacademy.com/) in Issaquah for dry gear.  Give them a call first as they operate from home and aren't always there.

If the REI was the Seattle store and that "older lady" was named Judy, you missed out.  She really knows her stuff!!!  ;)

am using a set of skechers river sandals over both my neo waders  and my wet suit booties. $40.00 @ payless shoe source.  work just fine in anything but nisqually river delta mud.. there, i'd suggest something like a regular wader or yakker boot if you can find or afford them...my simms felt soles are way to klunky to wear on the boat, so i went with somehting a bit less wide and herman munsterish. ;D crocs?? personally i thnk, what a 3rd world crock crocs are...but i've never been a fashion ' n' fad slave.

btw, r.e.i has way better selections online than they do in their physical stores. and sportsmans warehouse is having year end closeouts on paddle gear right now.. saw nice dry tops this evening marked down from $100.00 to $60.00 in the lacey store. might want to check the one nearest you..
