I know there are silvers that come up different water ways on the turnigan arm outside of anchorage.  Has anyone tried going up any in a kayak?  I have gone up 20 mile in my buddies jet boat, and fished bird and others from the shore but was wondering if they were worth trying to yak up? Obviously bird is limited by the water line and 20 mile is probably too fast to paddle up (unless someone has done it?) There are a lot of places other than ship creek that seem like they might be fishy. ???

maybe on a big plus tide you can ride the tide in at 20 mile?  I have no clue how far the spots are.  but on the Kenai I can get 4 miles or more up riding the tide

ship might be fun

I've wondered if it would be possible to peddle from the anchorage boat ramp over to the mouth of the little su.  By my calculation, its about 6 miles...which I bet could be done at slack tide in under an hour.  Probably would have to bring camping gear and come back the next day.  I know someone died in the knik arm last summer (I think he was in a canoe?) and the currents/ mud can be pretty dangerous so I am definitely not saying its a good idea...but might have pretty good fishing there at the mouth?

I did Lowell point to Cains head in seaward against the current which is a little over 6 miles and it was kind of rough with little reward.  I fished all the way so it was a good time and not a wasted trip because I learned to not bother with that side unless you want Pollock and flounder.  you could always go on boating forums and ask people who make those runs to the little Su if it would be worth it or what the conditions are like to get a little insight, I will ask my boss tomorrow if he has made that run to see how rough it is.  I have been kicking around the idea of putting in at the ship creek boat ramp at low tide and seeing if the silvers are stacked up waiting to go up stream. I don't know if Rudy has tried it for silvers but I did see his king video.  The other idea I had was to put in at rabbit slough and paddle to some of the spots there and float roe.  Only problem is that I can't use my mirage drive because of the weeds, I ran it on my buddies boat and the river was  pretty slow moving all the way to duck lake, so I will just use my longer paddle and try it.

So I went up twenty mile river with my guide buddy this weekend and learned a lot. First was that yes you can get up the river on a kayak to some pretty good spots.  But in order to do it you need to ride the incoming tide or pedal very fast through the slack tide.  He was saying that he has even seen people up there in catarafts.  Unfortunately you will not be able to fish past where the tide water and the river meet because the river was too strong and you need a motor.  You also need the tide to be over 26+ ft otherwise you are fighting the river. We pulled 6 fish out and they were all monster silvers (limit is two per day plus my proxy)  but it was a slow, we got on the river at 6am and hit one fish right away and did not catch anything else for a few hours, we hit our last fish after 3pm.  Also timing on that river is pretty key, it only has a small run of silvers (under 3,000) and when they are in, they are in thick.  But after a couple of weeks they get real lethargic, and refuse to bite despite what you throw at them.  We were wondering why this was and then when we filleted the one we did get to bite at the up river site we saw that they had been feeding on eggs. We spent most of the time on one of the lower sloughs trying to hit fresh chromies that were coming up.  We could have gone further north but I wanted to fish areas I could get o on my kayak. I will post some pics of the fish from my phone later.

Great report.  Its been on my radar but for me personally its tough to fish Silvers when I know i can catch kings.  But its definitely an option much closer to Anchorage.  Thanks for posting!!!!

A buddy is a fishing guide in the Bristol Bay region rivers.  He once told me Cohos stop feeding once in the river, and go predatory on other fish's eggs.
