I'm looking for to upgrade my year old Garmin 301dv fish finder for something with gps capabilities. This one's on sale but doesn't have the DV, I don't use the DV much on my Garmin though. Just wondering if any of you use this unit and how you like it. Cheers, Ed

Ps, the ad is in Canucks bucks:)

What transducer did you get with your Garmin? Since you have a dv model, it may be their GT20 transducer which also works with much more advanced models.
You may be able to get just a new head unit for much cheaper than a whole new system. I mention this because I like Garmin because of their screen clarity, program features and ease of menu layout.

If it's their older transducer, then you may be better off upgrading the whole system.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

To be honest, I'm not terribly impressed w/ my Helix 5 (sonar/gps combo, it doesn't have the nav chip...which maybe would help). I bought it after using nothing but lowrance products for a long time. The screen is nice, but I'm just not a huge fan of the menu layouts and the unit itself. I've also got a garmin echomap 43dv w/ gps that's on another kayak that I like a lot more. At this point one considering selling the helix just go buy another lowrance unit for my hobje. I've got two transducers for the helix, which makes switching it to different kayaks a lot easier, but I find I prefer the garmin/lowrance units more.

So maybe I should be looking closer at the Garmin then, love my sounder now. Just wish it had  mapping. I thought the humminbird looked to be a good unit. Does the Garmin have decent mapping?

To me, its better than the Humminbird. I went w/ that unit on a recommendation from a boating friend and while I like the sonar portion of it, the mapping is terrible. I'd look into Garmin's mapping and such before hand (youtube any unit you're considering.......speaking of youtube if you look up the helix 5, theres not a lot on there about it). And consider the lowrance units.....they have by far been the nicest mapping (IMO). Also, have a look at the RayMarine Dragonfly as well.

Thanks, I went with the Humminbird Helix 5dv gps nav+. So far I love it, the wide screen is awesome and the mapping to me looks great
