Anyone using a Scotty gimbal mount with rearward angled Hobie factory rod holders?  How does one prevent the Scotty post from rotation inside the rod holder?  I'm guessing there is a wafer of some kind that is inserted into the base of the factory holder to prevent rotation, but is it glued in? Any experienced views would be very appreciated.  I'm not sure it would be wise to add a rod holder forward of my knees and this looks promising.

I use these often, I even mount my small Scotty downrigger off one.  On the bottom of my Cobra kayaks factory installed flush mounts is a ridge that fits into the groves at the base of the gimbal mount.  This ridge and groove combination prevents rotation.  The extension is a bit loose in the flushmounts so I added some padding with duct tape and this seems to help.   Do the Hobie factory flush mounts not have these ridges?

Nor does the Revo.  They are standard on many factory rodholders on PB's, offshore rods usually have the grooves in the handle butt, esp those with metal handles.

Unfortunately this won't work for Hobies molded in rod holders. I thought about trying to find a way to retro fit it and figured there's a simpler way. Use a regular ram/scotty mount. ;)

Hey Brian---how about a couple pix of your downrigger mount?  I was at Outdoor Emporium yesterday, looking at the little $59.95 'rigger. It has a side mount, though.

It's a Scotty Laketroller.  They come with two attachment types.. one is a clamp to attach to a boat gunnel and the other has a post that fits into a standard scotty mount (included) much like the scotty rod holders.

Here's a picture..

On one of my kayaks I have 4 flush mount rod holders, so rather than mounting a bracket,  I use a gimble mount like the one in the first post.

Are any current gimbal mount owners willing to give me measurements?  I was thinking of making a "wafer" out of 1/4" thick aluminum.  I'll attach it to the bottom of the gimbal mount with masking tape, slop some goop on the bottom, align and shove into the factory Hobie holder.  Then just tape/clamp in place until goop dries. Here's a pic of what I propose to make and the 2 measurements I need.

-edit-

a measurement of the depth of the groove in the gimbal mount would be useful also.  I'm a bit concerned that this 'wafer' might be too shallow and require a tight seating in order to prevent slippage.

You probably don't even need the whole 'X' on your wafer.  My own flush mount rod holders only have a single ridge and it holds the gimble mount just fine.  If I remember I'll take some measurements for you when I get home.

Hey KT. If you're interested in a downrigger check out LFS marine in Ballard. They have the best price I've ever been able to find and local to boot. Although you'll probably have to order.

Let us know how your work comes along yakmoney. Very interesting idea.

Would it be possible to just run a squared pin thru the bottom of the rod-holder and use one axis of the groove?

I was thinking about that when I tried to make the gimbal work for my rod holder as well. Problem ended up being no access to the inside area where the rod holder was. Too far from the rear hatch and too far from the middle one. Might be possible on the Revolution though.

I'm a bit leary of putting penetrations that low into the hull, especially with the torque that will be applied to the end of the gimbal mount.  That's a lot of twisting force on a pin that is theoretically harder than the plastic it's mounted to  :o   If it worked it's way loose and became a leak, it might be quite a difficult repair.  I'm for adding without any new penetrations.  Worse case is it just spins and I have a wonky holder  :'(

Cut the Hobie flush mount out and replace it with a conventional flush mount?
