Took my son to the river for just a few this afternoon. I foul hooked one that came loose, and he got skunked. Saw a few rolling, and quite a few in the native's nets. We'll be on the green can about 10'ish since tide change is 11. Hopefully we'll find'em. Would like to see my boy get in a fight.

I went 0 for 7. Damn jigs... Two jacks, two shakers, one 10lb'ish keeper came loose at the boat, and two good fish I never saw, but they were heavy and pulling drag before shaking free. I think mooching would be the golden ticket. Plan to hit it again tomorrow and Thursday mornings.

Do it. Call in sick. Should be a good time out there.
Thanks for the post on your rigging.
I've always put a slight bend in my PW darts to give it more action.
See you Thursday- hopefully!

Great now I want to call in sick. How are you rigging your jigs, if your hook is attached to the jig you're going to lose most of your fish.

Rigging like this prevents them from using the jig for leverage to throw the hook on head shakes.

Workhard,

If I read the regs right this area is open July 1-Aug. 31, closes and reopens
Oct. 1-June 30.  That kind of seems like it's another way of saying it's closed for September and open the rest of the year?

I've put in on the west side boat launch before when I paddled a sea kayak from there to Alki in 9 hours so I know that launch.  Are you going across the flat to toward the mouth of the river, and would you by chance be heading that way the 27th or 28th of August?

Hooked 2 today. Landed one shaker, and lost the other before I saw it. Complete rookie mistake on my part this time... NEMrods lost a jack at the boat as well. I was mooching when the current was moving, and jigging during slack tide. My son scored a donkey sized starry as a consolation prize. Will be at it again tomorrow.

That's a great flounder!

So, for those of us who have not fished the Nisqually, can someone give an explanation of "the green can"?  Obviously it's one of the channel nav buoys, but the coast guard charts show two green lights. One in front of the delta, one to the west.  Guessing the fish would be closer to the delta...

I was thinking about going down there this weekend.  Looks like a big tide swing.  If launching from Luhr Beach a couple hrs before low slack, how long a slog thru mud would it be?  Or better to make it an evening trip and go for the high tide?

Inquiring minds want to know 😎

And yes I have searched other threads and sites

The green can is the pylon with a green marker on top. It's on the edge of the flat where the Nisqually River mouth dumps. It was once a green can buoy, and just kept the nickname even though the actual can is gone.

It's roughly a 2 mile paddle when the tide is  out since you can't cut right across the flats. No slog through the mud unless you launch or try to land on a negative tide. Just make sure you stay in the creek channel and you'll be fine. We launch a couple hours before low, and come in a couple hours after the flood starts.

Thanks, Poly.  If I make it Saturday it'll be a bright yellow pickup and a blue Native Slayer Propel 🙂
