The Oregon boaters card is a joke from an educational standpoint. It's a revenue generator. If you really want to learn boating, take a class from the Power Squadren or coast guard auxiliary.
I second that , you can take the boaters card test on line..... And anyone of your friends can sit down in front of your computer and type away for you.
Who actually has a friend that would sit through it for them?

When I took it i recollect all of about 20 minutes and didn't have much in the way of needing to read anything I didn't already know... Guess I'm not a complete dolt, but I can forsee the guy that takes all his drunk buddys fishing doing the test for them so he has more hands to operate the boat even though he himself is likely incompetent to operate said power boat.... Don't forget the dad that just gives his kid everything he wants no questions asked, he'd do it so junior can loaf off somewhere! I'm just saying if you have to hand it to operate a powerboat of size and it costs money then it should be just like a drivers license and require you to sit infront if the official take it your self then get in a boat with said official and prove your not a complete and deadly dolt.

It's nothing that elaborate.  I'd just tell my intern to take it for me and its done.

Your typical $300 kayak owner does not have an intern.  Some education would greatly benefit the majority of users. Hell, we've even seen members here anchor up and/or fish right in the middle of a channel.

 ;D

I'm kind of fond with how they get those beached boats off the beach.  They're usually in smaller pieces than the boat in that photo.  If that's not a catalyst to learn basic boating skills, nothing else will do it.

People anchoring a kayak in the channels is just daring Darwin.  I'd hate to read about losing someone, but sometimes there just isn't enough duct tape in the Universe to try to fix stupid.

Lee, you're right.  One doesn't need much skill in a small lake or a pond, but before a person is operates any craft where there are other boats, it seem like there should be some training.  But maybe kayaks are like bicycles - you don't need a license to operate a bicycle on the highway.
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

Some of the people with the most training and largest licenses, are the least qualified to be on the water, in any vessel.

That sounds counter intuitive.   The lowest rung of the qualified for water ladder you see on local waterways is very low.  Please elobrate on your interesting statement.

I've been boating since before the boater education card was required. My problem with the boater education card is that I haven't seen it help anything. Powerboats and jetskies still buzz too close to shore and other boats, people still ignore navigation and speed limit indicators, etc. IMHO the solution is enforcement. I live a stone's throw from the Willamette so I'm down there a lot. I have seen a Sheriff's boat ticket someone (for a non-fishing related issue) exactly once in the last 5 years. With those kind of odds what is the incentive to not be a raging alcoholic d-bag on your Blowsion-powered water crotch rocket?

(Much respect to all of the responsible, law-abiding powersports enthusiasts out there - I used to be one of you.)
