Because I run braided line on my downrigger trolling rods, I use a Blacks downrigger release mounted on top of my downrigger weight.  They work great with braided line, and you can control the release tension quite precisely.  For example, when switching from kokanee fishing to lake trout fishing, I turn the tension screw from 12 o'clock to 7 o'clock.  I have a couple of spare releases just in case, but have been using the same release for years.

Appreciate the suggestions for the release and settings.  Will give the Black release a try, good price on Amazon:  Price: $8.99 for the release that connect directly to the weight.  Was concerned about using the scotty pinch with braided line.  Slippery stuff.

You'll need to learn where to set the tension screw on your Blacks release by trial and error.  If the release pops open spontaneously, or when you increase the bow in your rod, tighten the release.  If you have trouble popping your fishing line out of the release with your rod, loosen the release.  If the release pops open the instant a fish strikes, consider tightening the release a bit so the fish will need to jerk on it for a couple seconds before it releases, which will set the hook better.
