The 1" ball at the base definitely does not have enough grip for this set up. The 1.5" will be solid though.
A GoPro pole mounted on and containing ball mounts will swing through an arc as the kayak rocks on waves, which will put a lot of stress on the ball mounts.  If the ball mounts slip under this stress, perhaps you could try making a GoPro pole based on Scotty parts such as the #412 replacement rod holder post, #259 rod holder height extender, #459 adjustable rod holder extender, and #427 multi angle adapter.  See http://www.scotty.com/fishing-gear-equipment/rod-holders/rod-holder-extenders.htm .  The rod holder extenders engage with gear-like teeth, so they wouldn't slip, but they wouldn't be continuously adjustable like a ball mount.
Thanks Pete. I'm familiar with the Scotty mounts. I prefer the virtually unlimited articulation the RAM balls allow, and with all three in my set I can get insainly creative or even break the mount down to use each section individually on other ball mounts or tracks I've rigged as well. The 1" ball pictured wasn't the intended base. I have a 1.5" ball with plenty of grip, but I was shipped the wrong socket. No worries though, the right one is on the way.

I do prefer a spline for rod holders though. Especially when trolling heavy gear or for heavy fish like chinook. I've found the RAM Rod 2000 to be a better fit for me personally due to the saddle hardware on my (Release) Truth Reels, and the RAM flush base is splined as well. Nothing wrong with Scotty at all. Just a matter of if you prefer chocolate or vanilla. No wrong answer, just like one more than the other.

Thank you, Pete.  As always, you're a whiz with modifications.

I have the RAM parts on order, but also have a box full of Scotty mounts that didn't quite fit the job I wanted to do the way I hoped they would.

I am definitely stealing copying your flag holder design.
