Ok so my positive terminal on my SLA broke at the joint leaving a stub barely above the plastic .... ohhh freaking great!! Got a freebie from a good friend and fisherman that sold me TLW's yak but we won't mention Salemite's name, well it also recently broke what the F#%€ #%<€¥¥+?!| stupid piece of foreign #€*+~{\?   ,.!€*+%    €€¥=*}|?   !<€¥+=*%#............ DEEEEP BREATH. I was siting there looking at them thinking how the hello can I get them hot enough to solder without melting them loose on the inside??? Well I personally can't so I took a small drill bit and drilled at a slight downward angle from both sides then took a 12-14 gauge wire (can't remember size it was a piece I had laying around ) split the wire in half and twisted into pigtails..... carefully ran half into the hole and out the other side.... twisted both tails together fairly tightly ( after reefing the first attempt and ripping it in half) .... then heated the wire with the soldering iron and laid some solder to it getting as much into the hole as possible ............. HOLLY FREAKIN SHIT HOT DAMN IT WORKED!! So I did the second one and slathered the hell out of them with silicone goop. Wasn't thinking to take progressive pictures as I already hurt myself trying to figure out what to do with two broken SLA's so here's the after picture.

Why are you hard soldering to the battery terminals?   Just solder and heat shrink on some wire disconnects to your wire leads.  Then slip them on the terminals. If you run the battery fully exposed with the chance of contact with water, then GOOP in place, or slather in silicon dielectric grease.

I did this on my T-13 where the battery is hung up in the front of the boat in a battery bag. Never had an issue with water contact.

I have moved on to using the Pelican 1120 case to house my SLA batteries in my Hobies.

I had slide on terminal but the hot side broke off just below the bend leaving a 1/6 of an inch sticking up because I didn't slather it to prevent corrosion in the first place.

Something tells me that maybe you should be taking a good long look at how you caused the same failure twice..... ::)

In the future, get 2 packets of 2 pin trailer connectors from the hardware store.  Crimp some blade connectors to one set and connect another set to your Fishfinder cable.  Attach the 3rd trailer connector to your charger.  This allows you to make a quick connect to either the fishfinder or battery charger without stressing out your connections.     ;D

I had blade connectors on them but nothing covering them and the wires were taped to the battery to prevent accidental slip off the battery terminal, so in the future all my battery blade connectors will get a health dose of marine goop brand new so there's no exposure to the salty air and water.

Ps. The second battery I only used twice, it was used ;)

If you're worried about your connector slipping off the blade, you can gently crimp the connector so it holds more firmly.  Never had one come off after "fine tuning".

As for covering, I just use the stock sleeve that comes with the blade connectors and don't use a dielectric grease. I do keep my batteries in a mostly closed ziplock while in use though.

I've got a couple of 6 y/o SLA's that are still going strong.  Only issue I've had is when I connected 2 together accidentally.....   ::)
