Just got it home at 7pm yesterday, and was thinking about paddling Hagg sometime today, but the weather is crappier than my motivation.   ;D

You got a spare XXL drytop and time to hit Hagg now?

You've had nearly 21 hours with it and it hasn't gotten wet yet?!?!?  Duuuuude!   ;)

I don't even have a drytop that would fit me.  Waders, PFD and a rain jacket are how I've been rolling.   8)  I'd join you if I could.

Just stay out of the water...

I found some cheap batteries that are a nice small size:

They also have a good selection of others:

That Cabela's deal is pretty good if you don't already have a charger and you don't mind a bit bigger battery.

Hey.. as a new corporate shill (see the link in my signature), I support his need to buy all the goodies before he ever gets out on the water.  ;D

Seriously though.. I've been doing this for years and still don't have a dry top. Think of all the fishing I would have wasted while waiting to get one.   A pair of waders and a rain coat is more than enough for a nice flat warm lake like Hagg.

Just found out Battery Exchange has a 12v 5 ah sealed lead acid battery that is about 3 3/4 inches wide 2 3/4 deep and 3 3/4 tall for 20 bucks.

Napa has a 1 ah trickle charger for 20 bucks.

I would probably get this over the cabelas deal because the actual size of the battery(ies)

Tough crowd!   :hiding:

Here's the angle I'm working here, and feel free to try it yourself at home.
I talk the wife into letting me buy a new kayak after just purchasing a new ATV in April, a newer SUV in May, and a winch for the ATV in July.

I always try to use the "its for safety" line to gather the goodies.  Now she's not stupid, but she's not as involved with my toys as I am, so the word safety can go along ways in getting accessories.  I could have just purchased a FF, but why not work the bank for a FF/GPS combo on the premise of "Safety"? We all know the kayak will work just fine with or without a FF, let alone a GPS.  I could probably paddle just fine in the surf in a banana hammock and a PFD, but if I can work a dry top into the mix - Why not?    :icon_thumright:

Outdoorplay has been VERY good to me and I am definitely buying Alkasazi a beer or two sometime, as he has been my point man through my entire yak purchase process.  Good man he is!   Thanks again bro!

BTW - The 12V battery from Cabela's is on order as of 20 mins ago.

That's a good deal from Cabela's insayn. Best I have found is $20 for the 7 amp hr gel cell at Fisherman's (they think it's a deer feeder battery) and a $5 trickle charger at Harbor Freight.  You got two and that's always nice to have.

BTW the hanging battery bag works great with a naked gel cell. I rigged one up in QCI by leading a pair of wires through the hole in the bag and twisting them around the posts. Worked great in ruffff conditions.

On the back of the unit, there is the NMEA output plug. Since I have no intention to use this, should I cover this to protect the circuitry?  What to use?

Ah, gotcha...I've used that angle myself.  I can see the advantage of waiting.. if you go out kayaking without a dry top and survive the wife might not think you need one later on.

Before mine even hits the water, I put a small rubbery plastic plug over it.  I had to heat the plug with a lighter to get it to stretch over the output, but it's on there good now!

Got my Cuda 250 installed tonight, and have the T'ducer curing in some Dicor self leveling RV roof sealant compound.   Wires are securely routed to the front  battery bag, and the t'ducer/power connector is routed through a water tight plug up to the head unit.

Followed this feller's concept and it works good on the cheap!  Like $3.50 cheap.

The  Cabelas 12 volt rechargeable battery with charger is only $30 bucks. Lots of power, and only weighs about 4 lbs. works for me!

Make sure you get chargers that have auto-shutoff for the gel cells.  Best way to ruin them fast is to overcharge them.
