As I mature as a kayak fisherman my needs/wants change to simplify and better organize my crap.

What I'm wanting to do is mount one or two ram tube 2008 rod holders (1 left and 1 right) directly behind my seat on gear tracs with ram balls or single ram balls with diamond bases. The purpose will be double duty as a vertical rod holder for transport and horizontal light duty trout trolling.i would only troll with the right side so I don't have both rods up front.

Are the ram tube 2008s up to this? I'm just asking because I have never used ram products other than on the monitors in our tractors.

One came with my yak, Native Propel 13, when I bought it used and I bought another before I tried them out...useless to me. Even to just serve as a spare rod holder for heavier halibut or salmon trolling rigs, the tubes won't stay in position.

I went with the heavier Scotty baitcaster model on an extension mounted in the track with a Stealth 2-point-track-mount, much more stable. Works well but the rod could get "pinned" into the holder if a bigger fish gets hooked or if I get into a snag.

Planning on going with a Folbe Advantage on an extension soon. For transporting extra rods, I added two flush mount rod holders behind the seat.

Thank you for your input AK.good or bad first hand experience is what im trying to get.i know you can ruff up the ball with sand paper to make it stick more. I may consider their tough tube also.

I still don't think I'd like them even if they held better. I don't care for how high the rods end up sitting and how the reels are left hanging out...maybe if there were deeper slots for the reel feet?

It works really well for rod storage as well as light duty trolling.  I drill out the bottom of the tubes so the rod butt falls all the way through. I feel the RAM Tube Jr.'s would work better. I recommend doing the tracks instead of mounting a RAM base since the tracks are easy to install and you can remove the ball when you don't want them there.  Mounting a RAM base in that spot is a P.I.T.A.!!

+1 on Rawk's comments. Also 1.5" balls. They have WAY more grip. 1"balls are great for smaller sonar heads, short action cam style mounts, or other light duty applications. 1.5" for everything else.

I'll emphasize "light duty" trolling.  Don't even think about a diver, huge pain in the ass.

I look at how yours is set up every time I see it lol. I will consider the Jr. As well.

Lee, my only trolling  will be flat line trolling for trout with no weight.
