I checked the fishing report at Moutcha: http://moutchabay.com/fishing-outlook.php

And then noticed they are still promoting the Kayak Fishing Derby: http://moutchabay.com/events-specials-resort.php

And emailed them to ask about it. THe response was this:

Hi Matt,

Yes, the Kayak Derby is still happening on August 28-30.  We are offering a
special rate package for campsite rental and kayak storage for all derby
participants: 3 nights - $120.00 or 1 to 2 nights $50.00 per night.

Please let me know if you would like more information.

----- so, is the derby still a go???

Last I heard, the resort was trying to convince DFO to allow CNR fishing.  That was awhile ago and I haven't received any updates since.

I just got word that "they" got word earlier today that the DFO will allow a fishery in the bay and that the resort is still planning on holding this event.  I wish them well and will support them any way I can, but I cannot attend this event as I've already made other plans for that weekend (doing a trip with a major outdoor magazine for an article!!!).

July 24 report:

http://moutchabay.com/fishing-outlook.php

Fishing Report as of July 24, 2009

Weather Conditions: Come join us! The weather has been hot and the drinks are cold! The wild life as been showing off with a pod of about 200 pacific white-sided porpoises racing through the piles of pilchard bait.

Inside Fishing: Fishing in the sound has its high points over the last few days with some spots holding fish earlier than they normally do. For instance, Princess Royal has seen a few high 20 pound Chinooks caught by the anglers fishing out of Moutcha Bay.  Mid-Sound up to Friendly Cove has been steadily producing Coho throughout the day with some good Chinook bites during the first few hours of daylight.

Offshore Fishing: Offshore fishing has been the real highlight of this week, producing five fish over 40 pounds, many in the 30 pound category, along with beautiful Coho. Fishing Baja Reef in 80 feet of water with the gear at 30' to 40' has been good. Using bigger bait will help you avoid snappy Coho, giving you the opportunity to hook the big Chinook.  Although great effort is going into salmon fishing, bottom fishing has stood up with halibut in the 30+ pound range, a good fight and perfect for eating.

Best Times to Fish:

*First light
* An hour before to an hour after tide changes
* Evenings from dusk to dark

Tip of the Week:

Top lures for both areas: Green and White Needlefish Hoochies, 6"Tomic Spoons, 577,500,602, Watermelon Coyote 4" Spoon, 6" Cop Car Spoons.

Just heard reports of fish out at Burdwood right now, a more sheltered area when winds are blowing on the outside.  Tight Lines!

****************************************

The 2009 outlook for sport fishing on Nootka Sound looks very promising.

Modest fishing results in 2008 were directly related to the devastating escapement rate in 2004 which was the second worst recorded since comprehensive surveys began in 1940. Four year old fish, which usually provide a majority of the fish we are targeting, were almost non-existent in 2008 are forecast to return in much higher spawning numbers in 2009.

In 2009 the 4 year old contingent of the spawning run to the Conuma River is expected to be 55% of the total return. In 2005, the Conuma River Fish Hatchery released 2,274,489 Chinook (Kings) with fair to good ocean survival rates unlike 2004.

With 4 year olds returning in much bigger numbers it should prove to be an exciting year for Chinook (King) fishing. If last year's much improved Coho (Silver) fishing was any indication, salmon fishing should produce the limit catches we have learned to expect. As an added bonus, it's a pink salmon year, so anticipate the return of the "humpies".

Two additional factors improving the 2009 sport fishing environment are:

    * the Alaska commercial quota has been reduced by 15%
    * the commercial quota on the west coast of Vancouver Island has been reduced by 30%

I'm kinda bummed.  I had planned to do this earlier this year. Then the talk was it was off, so I scraped the idea, didn't put it on the calender or put some money aside for the trip.  Now its back on and my time and long distance fishing trip funds are limited. :(

So I am planning on heading up to Moutcha and was wondering if anyone has made reservations yet?  Are there spots still available?  Convinced my wife that this could be a romantic getaway ;)  Hope to see some people I know up there.

Any one interested in carpooling from PDX?

If you can't catch a salmon at Moutcha, then it's probably time you got another hobby.   ::)

Yeah, I'm trying a new tactic this year. Rather than talking smack and getting shut out, I'm going to try self depreciation and see if that changes anything for me karmically.
