kinda liked those two at that shop. nice and friendly but a bit quirky. noticed he tried hard not to give away all the local fishing secrets but they both seemed like they wanted to help.

I never answered the 2009 Derby location question.  The event at Pacific City / Cape Kiwanda this year was great.  We enjoyed the location, but would also be open to Depoe Bay.   That could be a good alternative if conditions are bad.  Either way, if next year is anything like this year, it should be alot of fun.  Looking forward to it.

Well, I'm heading south via Amtrak the weekend of the 17th to visit an old high school friend, she's in Salem.  Looks like a straight shot across 22 to Pacific City, about 60 miles, a Saturday visit seems likely.  The State Park looks interesting, if we stay over Sat night what motel is decent???  Camping not an option.  What are the "must-see's" there???

Brian,

Here's a link to the Cape Kiwanda RV Park clubhouse. Looks pretty decent. I didn't see it when I was there, but Kim did and she thought it was nice.

Alan,

Congrats on Sue's first launch and landing. I'll bet she's totally hooked now!

Thanks Dave.  We both had a good time, and it was fun watching her get out on the ocean.  Going back soon I hope - Alan

From the RV site webpage..

To reserve the clubhouse for your group, your group must occupy at least 10 sites and each deposit a first night stay.

There are 10 tent sites.

Might make it tough to get the clubhouse even it it wasn't being used at the time.

I liked the location and had a great time but would definately be open to fishing new water someplace different.  In addition to this event I would like to suggest one during the B10 season next August.  I will help with planning, etc. if people are interested.

I'll second that Scott.  It would be a perfect venue!

Great idea on the Bouy 10 salmon derby!  I too would support an event like that. Plenty of camping at Fort Stevens state park and lots of access to the fishery (no surf launch etc) with lots of ramps in the area to choose from.

Through in some Astoria sturgeon fishing and I think this a great idea.

The real question is whether you would want this to be a full fledged derby or just a formal gathering.  Setting up a real derby with real prizes requires sponsors and right now with the AOTY and Pac City derbies we're probably already maxing out what we can expect from sponsors given our current size.  Then again we might double or triple our membership by this time next year.

True, does not have to be a derby, maybe just an event.  Sturgeon would be catch and release only then as the season closes to retention around the end of june/early july.  Salmon would be best after 2nd weekend of Aug (generally).  A June sturgeon gathering would be a cool idea also.
