Hey all, I was just reading up on oregons fishing regs for 2017, as of jan 1st, all boats fishing for ground (bottom) fish, must have a descending device on board, i copied and pasted this from ODF page...
" The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission has adopted new regulations that go into effect on January 1, 2017, including a requirement that vessels fishing for groundfish (bottomfish) in the ocean must have a descending device on board and must use a descending device for all rockfish released outside of 30 fathoms. There are also changes to bag limits. News release "

Huh.  So I'll ask the obvious questions to those on the forum who have used descending devices: What descending devices are available?  What are the pros and cons of those descending devices?  And which descending device or devices do you recommend?

Thanks for calling our attention to this issue.

I ordered a fish descending device from oceaned.org.   I believe it is the Shelton product and works well.  And it was free with good instructions.  Hate seeing floaters!

It came with a cool laminated rockfish ID card and a nice "no floaters" sticker.

Lately, I have not been catching too many rockfish that I can't harvest, but it's really nice to have on board.

In that recompression device video @2:46 the guy sitting in the dinette looks like he's a bit "green".   :puke:

The question I had already is what if you aren't fishing in 30 fathoms + ? The places I have fished so far and most likely to fish in the future are only maybe 8 -10 fathoms. So, from my reading of it, it wouldn't be required to have a descender on board. Right? How deep are some of the places you guys normally fish for bottom fish?

I read it as a must for all who have rockfish on board, or are fishing for rockfish, no matter how deep you are fishing at the time

I agree with boxofrain.   The placement of the comma after "on board the vessel, and"  implies to me that if one is fishing for groundfish,  a descender has to be onboard regardless of the depth you are fishing.
"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."

I guess it's easy enough to put together a descender setup and have it on board in my tackle bucket in the event I find myself in deep enough water to reel up a fish with the Benz.

No that I think about it I can only remember ever seeing this on a couple of fish I pulled up just west of Haystack out of Cape Kiwanda in 80-90 feet of water.

I think the deepest I have been in at PC or DB is 120 ft or 20 fathoms. So be sure you also have a depth finder or line counter..... if not use a descender on all releases even if there not blotted. I have seen them blotted at 120 ft BTW.

It's Mojo.  He meant "blotto".

ODFW web site lists Fish Grips, the same ones I've been carrying for years, as a descending device.

http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/recompression/send_that_rockfish_down.asp

"Jaw clamp
"This is a clamp that releases with a sharp tug on the line after the fish is lowered to depth (for example, Fish Grip or RokLees) or releases automatically at a pre-specified depth (SeaQualizer, for example). Tip: with the Fish Grip device, use heavy rubber bands around the handle to keep the clamp closed securely on the fish’s jaw."

The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.
