I have one that's very pathetic and want to replace it with something better. Considering the new Oregon 2017 rule requiring one on board while bottom fishing, I thought I'd get the ball rolling. I think Rawkfish has a good one?

ur in compliance. when i`m out there is rarely a time where i would need one. have let plenty of fish go and always have took off like rockets. no eye or stomach`s popping out and none have floated. i will have one onboard though. how deep are u? i usually am about 30 up to 100 fow. mostly around 45.

Here is the link to the one I ordered for about a year or so ago.  There is a video on how to use it as well.  Pretty simple to use and comes with instructions.  Not bad for free.

These things are surprisingly easy to make yourself, but the professional ones are really nice.  Here's one I've used with great success in the past.  Simply a barbless 9/0 or 10/0 octopus hook snelled upside down on a piece of tuna chord with a good sized snap on each end.  You don't even need to take your lure off the rod you were using to catch the fish, just snap it on the existing rigging add a big weight and send it down about 2/3 down after hooking the fish on the lip.

In a pinch I've even put on a large jig head without a plastic bait on it, about 10 oz or larger, and wrapped my line around the shank of the hook so the hook points down, pinned the hook slightly in the lip or face of the fish and used that to send it down.  That only works for smaller fish though.

Keep in mind it can be surprising how much lead is needed to send down a large yellow eye.  Some of the medium to bigger ones require at least a full pound of lead, maybe more so keep a couple large weights in your gear box.

This is something that should probably be included in the captains bags at ORC.  They're cheap enough even if you don't get the free ones that were linked above.  Eliminates any excuse for anyone that doesn't already have one, and it never hurts to have a backup if you do.

Not a bad plan. Do you have any issues getting enough of a tug on the fish with so much lead? It almost seems like it would be best to have an anchor spool or handline with nothing but cordage to go along with the cannonball and upside down snell.

If you hook 'em the right way you shouldn't need to tug much at all. If you send them down far enough they'll essentially swim off by themselves.

It's really cool to see these for the first time! No more watching fish float away!

Mine is very similar to Rawkfish's descender.  I just used an actual sturgeon hook and leader.

I don't like the round 16oz weight I have and amount of leader I used, as it gets all tangled up in my gear bucket.

I plan to make a mold for a rectangular weight 24-48oz with a stainless thingamajigger coming out the top with a loop in it to attach to.  The thingamjigger will then be shaped similar to the Shelton one, but mo' gooder.

After trial and error this is the best setup I've come up with.

I like Jeff's setup, but since I've got one of these already, I'll use it. Think I'll use an old speargun band.

What is the red thing between the weight and the Shelton descender, and what is its purpose?
